BigGrin Hi Trev, Alan and Martyn

Thanks for looking in and your comments,

The problem with iron bolt corrosion was finally solved when a mixture of copper and Zinc that was hot rolled to give it strength was used to replace the iron bolts but this still did not stop the foundering of the ships Ramillies [97 guns ] and the Centeur [74 guns] off the Newfoundland coast.

BigGrin Hi Mick

Thanks for looking in and your comments, I guess the look is a little shocking compared with the normal weathered look that is most often produced that is more akin to the look of Muntz metal [60% copper,40% Zinc ] weathered sheathing a perfect example of Muntz metal sheathing can be seen on the Cutty Sark.

BigGrin Hi All

Just a couple of pic's to show the finish on the copper eye bolts when using the Liver of Sulfer Gel, It gives a darkgrey/black almost pastel shade that is quite pleasing.

BigGrin Hi Trev

Thanks for looking in and your comments, the gel reacts almost instantly on pure copper and takes a little longer on alloys such as brass. It has the added bonus that the degraded solution [ after a days use] can be used as a fertilizer, tomato plants love it apparently.

BigGrin Hi All

I am now half way through making up the 26 18-pounder gun carriages they come pre cut an a sheet of walnut ply that also has the 9-pounder carriages on it. The assembly is quite straight forward the clean up before assemble takes the timeBlink . I have painted one red so far and there is more furniture to add to each carriage yet and note the square axles in round wooden wheel holesLOL . More soon.

Regards

BigGrin BigGrin Hi Steve

Thanks for looking in and your comments, I will be using a blackener on the cannon but I am awaiting the arrival of the ultrasonic cleaner before I do it , I have krick and the sulfer gel to do it. The brass cannon have been sitting in bags for a good few years so the protective coating/oil has I think hardened off as when I did the lower stub cannon I had mixed results even though the cannon were degreased and scrubbed with a scourer. Hopefully the ultrasonics will take it off.

BigGrin Thanks everyone for looking in and your comments, the square axles I think were done for a reason this being only 4 points rubbed against the round hole for the axle so cutting down on friction so movement during loading was easyer.Cool

BigGrin Hi All

All the 24lb cannon carriages have now been made up and painted along with the cannons themselves, right now I am trimming the etch trunion straps and shaping them the fit the trunions after shaping all 40 they will be rediped in blackener before fitting. Five have been finished to this point so just 21 left to do. Four of the 12 9lb gun carriages have been made up also. The last few pics show the cannon on the deck which certainly makes it a lot busyer although there is lots more furniture to add to the carriages like the flintlocks and tackles. More soon.

Regards
