Morning Fellow Modellers, I thought I would post my weekly update before I shoot off to work this time. On this part of my build I will be looking at the part-works supplied photo-etched rivet strips that fit around the bow plus some modifications I added. The attached image shows the anchor-well on the forward starboard side of the bow. I added a 0.5mm plastic strip around the bottom of the anchor-well to resemble the raised lip or edge on the real thing. This was to prevent the anchor from damaging the hull as it was lowered. The next image shows how I drilled and filed out the free flood holes on the starboard forward bow. I also chose to represent the torpedo tube doors [bow flaps] in the shut position. This took a bit of work as I had to grind away a lot of the fittings behind them to allow a flush fit. This image shows a close up of the part-works supplied rivet detail. I found these strips to be very delicate, especially when trying to file smooth the rough edges left when it was parted from the fret board. I also had to rough the underside with 100 grit sandpaper it give it a better chance of bonding. My method was to apply a thin smear of PVA to the underside and hold it place using tape while the glue dried overnight. Once dry I ran a bead of superglue along all of it's edges to really bond it down firmly so no edges would accidentally lift away while handling. When fixing the completed bow [supplied plastic from the part-works], I found I had to file a lot of the hull on both the bow and main hull for the parts to align. In this process I had to file away the cluster of small, round mouldings on the underside, port and starboard sides. In real life, these small, round shapes are actually hydrophones [underwater microphones] that would listen in and were part of the sonar set-up. To replace the ones I had filed away when fitting the bow I hit upon the idea of using 2mm washers. Once these were glued and the centres filled in they seem to blend in quite well. Once painted and weathered you won't notice the difference. The attached image shows the lower starboard hydrophone washers! Hi Phil, thanks for your encouraging comments mate. Regarding the conning tower I will have to buy a 1/72 scale donor model to measure up and then convert to 1/48 scale. I won't be starting this part of the build until later in the year. The conning tower is a model in itself really and I need to get more of the main hull and interiors underway first. I also have a lot of expenses coming up soon so financially it isn't viable to purchase the donor just yet anyway.
