Hi Andy... The unimax looks expensive, until you break down the price of each individual component, jig saw drill lathe etc... and great work... best regards, Ian Ian Builds in progress: E-type, HMS Victory, HMS Endeavour, HMS Soverein of the Seas Wish list: Bentley Blower http://forum.model-space...spx?g=posts&m=30439

best regards, Ian Hi Ian, hadn't quite thought of it like that but I agree, break it down to component level and it turns out to be quite a fair price..... Regards Alan

At last, finally feel well enough to get back to doing some work on the lady.... Have now done as much as I can on planking the 2nd deck and will finish when dummy gun supports are in place.... Also had a go at treenailing, first by drilling a .4mm pilot hole using a micro drill and inserting .3mm plastic fishing line coated in PVA..... fine sanded to finish. Can't decide whether to stain light or dark oak, will have to do some samples first and work out the best way of applying the stain..... Gandale attached the following image(s):

Finished fairing the hull and now started the infamous planking stage... Following Mr T's official build have made a start on the stern section... hopefully will finish this part off during the next session. Have to admit, found bamboo easy to manipulate but, will also add it is difficult to cut cross grain with a modellers knife. Cut to length using a razor saw.... much easier..... Should make cutting out of gun ports interesting..... Gandale attached the following image(s):

Looks great.
You're right about the gun ports though. I think that will prove incredibly difficult. Unless the more experienced have any killer tips.

My method of cutting small square holes, is to drill a small pilot hole in each corner, and then cut out the hole very carefully with a cutting disc in a Dremel. Model boats built so far:-
Billings Cutty Sark Scratch built twin IC RC Vosper MTB. Scratch built rc electric hybrid. Scratch built rc IC hydrofoil (ran happily on snow as well as water!) Plus numerous numerous RC planes. Under construction Sovereign of the Seas! 1200:1 HMS Victory (by Mantua) The Battleship Yamato (seriously considering building as an RC model)

Just remember to wear safety goggles when using these small cutting disc's as they can do a lot of damage to eyes and face if the shatter regards Andy Current builds:-C57,Zero, Lamborghini Countach, Caldercraft HMS Agamemnon,Robi,R2-D2, MFH Cobra .

Alan, before I start cutting out, I'm going to build a few gun ports out of some spare scraps of bamboo, just to practice on. Lots of steady hand practice Model boats built so far:-

Great work on the planking alan, looks really clean! i had the same idea of drilling holes in the corners of the ports, or just drilling holes in the shape of the port, and using a rotary tool/dremel, though i'll have to buy one first ^^ Processing - Progressing
Previous builds: HMS Victory Current build: HMS Sovereign of the seas

I found this blade in my Draper modellers knife set. It's like a razor saw, works well on bamboo but only on the forward or backward stroke depending on which way you insert it into the handle.... Gives a clean cut and just may help with the cutting out of gun ports..... Regards Alan Gandale attached the following image(s):

Finally finished planking the stern section.... Sure glad I had the Dremel to help shape the profile.... Bamboo is awful to cut... even with brand new blades..... First fitting of hull planks tomorrow..... ... Gandale attached the following image(s):

Have finally made a start on planking.... Taking it nice and easy and so far I like how it's coming along. Did find though I needed to pre-drill the pin holes with a .5mm drill in order to stop the planks from splitting. Think I am going to enjoy this part of the build, may not be saying that a few weeks in but we will see....... Gandale attached the following image(s):
