Magpie Not at all, that's the purpose of the forum; guess I've got a bit more sanding to do. Keep up the good work. Artful ArtfulBodger Previous Build: HMS. Bounty

Totally inspiring! Your planking looks imaculate as does the cutting of the gun ports! Any tips would be much appreciated.

Wilfy I don't hold myself out as any expert. I'm very slow when it comes to building. For the gun ports I think you must make a jig. I cut open a piece of copper pipe, flattened it then cut it and filed it to size. This template needs to be super accurate. Then I marked each port in turn, worked from the edge nearest the frame as a datum line and slowly cut them out whilst repeatedly remeasuring. Also with your template add a small tag to it so that it is easy to hold. The planking was done with the majority of the deck before fitting and then merely planking over the joins to get a smooth look. Happy cutting!!! ArtfulBodger ArtfulBodger Previous Build: HMS. Bounty

Sorry to ask again but I think my question got lost in the traffic.
I notice that a number of experts here are planking the lower and middle decks and also shaping the deck posts. I can understand it around the cut out area as we have done with the entry port, but the whole deck and with such detail? Won't it all be completely covered up
Am I missing something important here, which is highly probable as a novice, of course.
Thanks guys.

I think the deck posts are important because they contribute to the rigidity of the ship, I stole the idea from someone on here but I can't remember who, perhaps Magpie.[I made my posts by using a piece of 5mm square hardwood and then clamping my dremel in a vice and rotating the wood manually. I can't afford a lathe but if you've got one you're quids in.] The deck planking on the lower or middle decks is applicable only for the lunatics like me who will know its there, whether or not it is seen. Think of a well crafted chest of drawers lined in mahogony or other more expensive wood; its just a personal thing. AND if you are thinking about it... do it. The cost is not too prohibitive and the extra work is satisfying but as I said its your choice. ArtfulBodger Previous Build: HMS. Bounty

Thanks. Yes I put the deck posts in as well, it was a brilliant idea that I was surprised DeA never utilised to give the ship strength. But I never shaped them. Just thinking about the fairing, planking and cutting out the gun ports, I don't think I will be joining the clutch of lunatics here. John

Well these are the last photos before surgeon Beattie puts me under the knife! Hope they give me some anesthetic (hold him down loblolly boy). I decided to stop planking at this point because inserting the next deck will be made more difficult with the hull planking built up. Any views would be gratefully received. I haven't finished off the stern as yet but there's time, hopefully. It is my intention to double plank eventually but as Zeptrader says, the better the initial build the easier the 2nd planking. Fair winds and good building... ArtfulBodger Previous Build: HMS. Bounty

I must apologise to all my shipmates here because although I'm back home, my arm doesn't work at the moment, nor do other bits of me so the build is on hold. With your agreement at having a stow away within your ranks I'll just watch your builds progress. There are some great projects on here, hopefully if I can get back to it I will be chasing your wake. (Rather like 'Master & Commander') I doubt if I'll get anywhere near the great builds though. Sorry to interupt the general build forum. ArtfulBodger Previous Build: HMS. Bounty

No apology, necessary and I would be honoured indeed if would would keep an eye on my build for me when I post questions.
Take it easy and get back to 'fighting fit' again soon.
Best wishes.

It looks a bit tatty but I'm hoping second planking will hide some of my sins. ArtfulBodger Previous Build: HMS. Bounty
