Hello Trev,

Thanks for looking in and for your comments mate, much appreciated, and yes, some lovely detail on these resin sets! I really don't know how they manage to cast them in one go without ruining the mould upon removal?!

Simply amazing stuff!? Blink Cool ThumpUp

Hello all,

Time for a quick update.

I managed to add some detail to the various parts of the resin cockpit including some etched parts and a small amount of scratch building? In fact the Aires resin set is so detailed and very nearly perfect, that there was very little missing when compared to my reference photos, and apart from some PE control levers and rudder pedal frames, the only bits I had to scratchbuild myself were on the resin control column and the plastic control wheel (which was a kit part). The control column/wheel needed various buttons, triggers and cables to be made from stretched sprue and copper wire, plus a PE box added to the rear face of the column (apologies for the poor photos but this thing is quite small so difficult to get it in focus!).

The cockpit facia/instrument shroud had the resin gunsight added but the clear part of the sight will be added at a later date, just before I fit the windscreen to avoid constantly knocking it off?! I also added a couple of strands of copper wire beneath the sight to replicate some electrical wiring that is visible on the real thing. The rest of the resin parts that make up the cockpit just needed a few PE throttle/control levers to be added to the sidewalls. The armour plate/headrest part from the resin set was glued to the aft face of the main cockpit piece, and the radio shelf should be glued to the back of that but I've left it off for now to make the painting of it easier?

The shelf behind the pilots’ seat that holds the radio equipment needs no additional etch/scratchbuilt parts, but I did scrape away the very thin skins of resin from between the cables so that they stand alone and look more realistic - you can just see them between the two main boxes? All of the parts were then primed using Tamiya (Light Grey) ‘Fine’ Surface Primer, including the PE instrument panel.

I’ll leave that lot to cure properly overnight and hopefully get to add some colour to all of this over the weekend!! There are still some seatbelts to add to the seat and I may add an extra sculpted detail to the seat but they’ll be added in the next day or two when everything is painted?

I've also received some more bits from the postie today!! A set of Masters’ turned brass machine gun/cannon barrels, a set of resin replacement wheels (the kit ones are rubbish with those awful vinyl tyres!) and a set of resin main undercarriage wells and doors with a small PE fret included. The only thing I will likely still have to buy for the aircraft will be a set of white metal 'Scale Aircraft Conversions' undercarriage legs but they can wait a little while longer?

That’s my build up to date, see you in a few days with (hopefully) a fully painted cockpit assembly?!

Thanks for looking, all comments and criticisms welcomed.

Hi Kev

Your making a cracking start, looking forward to seeing more.Looking by the size of the parts your holding, I am amazed at how much detail they can get into such small parts.

Good luck in the comp.BigGrin

WOW Kev,

Where do I start? Scratch building on such a tiny part Blink Blink then scraping away the resin between those cables, which incidentally do really out now Drool Did you manage to avoid any breakages while doing that? They look like they would break just by looking at them Blink

The quality of the all the resin is gorgeous Drool Drool

Excellant work ThumpUp

Hello Taz, thanks for looking in and posting comment my friend, and thanks for the good wishes, much appreciated!! CoolThumpUp

I have been modelling for years and often scratchbuild details myself but I'm still amazed every time I look at these Aires resin upgrade sets? The guys who model the masters for producing the moulds from, must be from a different planet in my opinion and their skill at modelling is way better than anything we mere mortals could ever achieve?! Huh Blink Cool Cool

Hello Dave and thanks for your great comments mate, very much appreciated!! ThumpUp ThumpUp

Having a really good quality 'optivisor' helps greatly with seeing things on such a small scale, mine is Japanese, bought through a proper optician and I also have a very steady hand which is kinda useful? Blink BigGrin Cool

I didn't break any of the cables, the resin skin between them was very thin and I used a really sharp fresh scalpel blade which went through like butter? With the resin cables being fairly flexible, it was just a case of taking it slowly and carefully and it actually proved to be easier than I anticipated!!

Thanks again for looking in and commenting Dave!! Cool
