First up is the instructions. 5 A4 sheets printed both sides with written and pictoral, with colour pics to help, broken down into individual sections for cockpit, airframe, missiles etc. Next are the cast parts, all in metal, no resin. Next up, decals, loads of em!! And last but not least, the photo etch parts in nickel silver! Many thanks for posting this as i am now going to get the flightpath set for mine. Never understood why flightpath do such great upgrades but never have images of the sets posted. This one looks good, you will have a brill build with this one - and lucky you as you get a "free" model in the bargain Hope your build starts well and goes well Happy Modelling

It is a cracking set, the pe is very nice and the castings require very little work. The cockpit tub should be really nice with all the pe, so I am eager, and a little apprehensive, as this is my first "proper" aircraft build, EVER!!!!

Some great detail in that Flightpath set Daran, that'll take your Lightning to a whole new level and it'll certainly keep you busy for the rest of the year!!
I have a 'Classic Airframes' 1:48 DH Vampire T.11 in my stash and I have Flightpath's full detail set for that, which is equally as good? They certainly do make some cracking upgrade sets and a lot of nice resin Ground Equipment sets as well!!
Looking forward to you starting BOTH of your Lightning builds!!

Hello Kev, not sure about both being built! But I am really impressed with the Flightpath upgrades as you will see, I may have to build more planes!!
I am going to be building the Lightning being readied for a flight on a hard standing, so I thought these might help.
First up some wheel chocks! I have been looking at some info on the Lightning, and had to have this as well. It is a lovely little kit and superb quality. Instructions are the same quality as the other pack, 3 double sided sheets with colour pictures, nice clean white metal castings, decals, pe sheet, a bag of hoses and cables and a resin casting which is as near perfect as you could ever want!!

Ooooh!! That's nice Daran!!
I've had my eye on one of those Flightpath Houchins for some time now and I'll get one eventually for a future RAF jet diorama that I have in mind? That's a great purchase and which can be used on quite a few other jet dios if you get the urge Daran, as although it was in use at the time of the EE Lightnings, they still use the Houchin on modern jets like the Typhoon, so it can be used in different eras without worrying about it looking out of place?
Looking forward to seeing the Houchin built almost as much as the Lightning now!!

Glad to assist Daran!!
There is also a 1:48 resin/white metal/etch kit of the RAF 'Sentinel' Tug Tractor here:
http://www.aim72.co.uk/page127.html
It was used to tow aircraft during the 'V' bombers era, which would be the same as the Lightnings, so I see no reason why it would be any different for towing a Lightning or maybe even a Houchin? Not sure if it would be too big for the Houchin towing and was purely for shifting aircraft or whether they were indeed also used for moving heavy ground equipment? The kit is not cheap but it looks nice and is also available from Hannants via a link on that website? As I say not sure if that is the correct tractor for the Houchin but it would likely still be appropriate if in a dio with the Lightning, though don't quote me on that one and do some more research yourself before buying if you decide to get one, just to be sure .... and don't tell the missus I showed you the link!!
There is also a nice article about the David Brown RAF Tug Tractor 9with some great photos) here .... :
http://www.britmodeller....ircraft-towing-tractor/
.... which I know was used during WWII and right up to the early 60's, so could well have been used on Lightnings (or Houchins) at some point before it was taken out of service? Haven't found a decent 1:48 kit of one yet but will keep looking when I have some time mate?
Hope that helps?

Delivery today, couple of upgrades and the kit itself!!!! Of course I had to have a look in the box! Its been a few years since I has an Airfix kit and all of those were 1:72nd scale, so this is a bit of a novelty for me. Instructions and decals are the same as I remember! Sprues look nice and clean cast in light grey plastic and no warping. The detail is very crisp, really looking forward to this build. There are still some parts to come, but not for the plane, so I can make a start, once I have gone through the instructions for everything at least twice!!

That a nice looking kit I must admit that used to think that Airfix kits were low end kits until I got one recently to find I was sorely mistaken, now I have quite a few Look forward to see you building something with wings

Well I made a start! Throttle panel is in and I have modded the cockpit tub to take the new control stick. I know its not much, but its a big step for me as I haven't built anything smaller than 1:35 for 2 decades!! Next up will be the dials and some paint, ooo and the ejector seat!

Looks like you have enough there to keep you busy for a while. Great looking kit with all the additions you have planned.... Good luck with the build, will be following your progress all the way..... Regards Alan

Nice start to your build and you have plenty there to keep you busy for a while I have an Airfix lightning that Eduard re-bixed a few years back and while it has some extras i do like that flightpath set you bought so will be looking at this a little later today. Hope the build goes well. Happy Modelling

A fabulous kit Daran and nicely detailed straight out of the box, it'll be stunning once you've added all of those extra goodies - I must get myself one of these!! Nice start to the build mate, looking forward to seeing some more and good luck in the comp with this, I'm sure it'll be a worthy contender!
Well done!!

Thanks all for looking in and your comments.
Managed some more on the cockpit tub and ejector seat, I need to get some paint on now before I can go any further as the dials and gauge decals need to be done. So I assembled the afterburners instead!!

Nice update Daran, the cockpit is coming together well, hope you have a steady hand when it comes to painting all of those switches and dials!!
Love the look of those exhaust cans, a great improvement on the kit parts and will make a huge difference to the finished model? All looking good so far my friend, well done and keep it up!!
How are you finding this aircraft modelling Daran, enjoying it I hope?

Damn, that tub looks spectacular with all the additional etch. I always love how cool such cleanly installed etch looks without paint
