Scratch building is an art and you are an artist Roy, whilst it may be a slower pace of constructing a model it must be so satisfying when finally complete.

Its not for everyone but I think everybody can appreciate how much work and skill it takes to complete a project like this.

I for one certainly don't have the time, patience or skills for scratch building so enjoy watching yours come together.

Many thanks Al.

I've built up the oil filter and fitted it at the front and now have added the uprights and steering rack.
The ends aren't attached yet as that will depend on the upright position once the wheels are added.
Also added some wiring to the engine.

Roy.

Well, the engine is now in and the exhaust fabricated and fitted.
As with all my scratch cars, the manifold and pipes are made from old microphone cable with copper wire fed into the core.
It can then be cut, glued together with C/A and bent into the shapes required. Quite simple really.

Lots more 'plumbing' now also added and the fluid reservoirs have been made, fitted and connected up.

Radiators next, plus a lot more fiddly stuff on the engine...

Edit... not sure why, but some of my pics are coming up as file attachments???

Sorry - a few more pics as I realised why the 'file attachment' ones weren't showing - too big!

Looks superb Roy.

The manifolds although as you say very simple they look spot on!!

If its not too much trouble I would really find it very interesting to hear how you make some of the other parts when you post as I sometimes sit here thinking how the hell did he make that BigGrin

I'm really enjoying following your build Cool

If there is anything particular, please tell me.
I have no 'secrets' about what I do and I'm really happy to help if I can.
I'd love to see a few others have a go at 'scratching'...

Believe it or not, but before I started on this one, I offered all the body, engine and wheel parts as a complete freebie on another forum, to try to get someone else interested in scratching a model.

After 4 days of zero interest, I withdrew the offer and now - I'm doing it myself.
Scratch building really isn't the 'black art' everyone thinks.
All it needs is a bit of patience and above all, determination to do it.

Roy.

Roy

You are a master at this and i am so impressed by your builds - they are fantastic.

I think the big thing would have to be how accurate you are with scaling all of your parts. I can just imagine if that was me trying something like this i would never get it to all fit together because i am useless at accurate measuring and the like.

This looks like it will be another cracking model when complete and I look forward to your next update.

Could i please ask is that braided "cord" you have used in the engine section the tamiya made product?
Happy Modelling

...don't laugh...
The braided lines are just silver Venetian blind cord in thick and thin variations.
Any fabric shop sells it at pence per metre.

Well that is a surprise. Not sure if the tamiya stuff is new but seems to appear on everything i read or lookup on various model shops.

Your version i would never in a million years have guessed was blinds cord. Its looks very good indeed.

Very nice work Roy, some lovely detail going into this. I think a lot of modellers don't scratchbuild parts purely because of a fear of messing up a commercial kit or not having the confidence to start a build from absolutely nothing other than an idea? The thing to remember for those who want to try it is that confidence comes with familiarity and practice? All it takes to make a start is tackling something simple and flat like a large scale car dashboard or an aircraft instrument panel which can easily be made from plastic card and strip - once that has been accomplished more difficult tasks can be attempted?

I agree with you Roy, it isn't the black art that some believe it to be, it's just practice, patience and knowledge which all come over time. For knowledge, a good starting point for model cars would be to get hold of copies of both of Gerald Wingroves' excellent books - 'The Complete Car Modeller'. A true master of his art! Cool ThumpUp

Many thanks all you guys.

The engine area is getting there.
Radiators, header tank and plumbing, carb linkages and fuel lines, then front wheels, shocks/springs, torsion bars...

On we go.

Well, the car now has seats.
They do look pretty odd, but they are the same as those in the car I'm basing the model on which is currently awaiting delivery at the Lister factory.

All good fun so far.
Any questions - please ask.
