Hull Construction Part 3, Scuttles part a.
Adding etch scuttles makes a big difference to the look and feel of a ships hull, even if you have drilled out the scuttles. Comparing picture 1 and 2 you can immediately see depth of detail the etch brings.
The process of adding the scuttles is relatively simple if not a little repetitious. The scuttles are carefully removed from the fret using a sharpened No. 11 blade. A small amount of medium CA glue is decanted into a stable container, I use a milk bottle top. I use a length of fine wire in a pin vice to apply the glue around the edge of the drilled out scuttle as in picture 3. I use a wax etch placing pencil to pick up the part and, with a steady hand, place the shuttle in place, taking care to keep an eye on the parts orientation; as in pictures 4, 5 & 6 Some of the parts need to be trimmed to fit. any scuttle that looks like it may foul is dry fitted first and then trimmed as required, this can be done with the same No11 blade. See picture 7
So as not to lose the scuttles removed from the fret I tend to do a small number at a time, completing a section of the hull at a time.
Thanks for looking in

Great work Jase, they look excellent. Definitely picks out the depth, looks like it was a tedious job, but well worth while. Mark Regards Markwarren (Mark) Admin

Hull Construction part 4. Gun shutters.
As The build progresses down the hulls sides there are more than just scurries to consider. there are grab Handels, davits and because this is a pre-Dreadnaught quite a few gun ports which all have shutters.
The Kit comes with plastic gun shutters but those supplied in the MK1 set have more detail and a better scale thickness.
The for and aft guns also have a grill. the kit supplies Photo Etch parts for this, however the MK1 set had a finer finish so I went with them. Photo 1
Having removed the etch parts, Photo 2, they were carefully folded using a small blob of medium CA to hold them together. no folding aid needed they fold easily. the parts were then put in the correct position along side the hull. A number of them are slightly different sizes so car is needed not to mix things up. Because the guns do not retract the shutters close around the barrel. you can display the model with the shutters open al closed, I have opted for open.
medium CA was used to fix the shutters in place. I found slightly bending the hinges with tweezers first aided mounting the shutters. Photo 3, Photo 4, its worth checking the shutter positions before fixing into place as some can fowl on grab Handels or, as in photo 5 & 6, the anchor chain guid. Some shutters will fold out against the hull, others will not as in photo 7, but carefully placing the hinges in the recess designed for the plastic parts allows for easy mounting and adds some interest I think.
once in place the shutters give you an impression of a powerful ship bristling with guns.

Looks excellent Jase, they really make the guns stand out. The middle shutter on picture 8, looks like it should be the other way round. Mark Regards Markwarren (Mark) Admin

I have always said my diary are warts and all I did correct the shutters but for another reason that will be in a later post, my diary is a little behind my actual progress
Many thanks all for looking in.

Hull Construction part 5. Davits. As I progress along the hull there is the occasional folded davit that needs to be fitted before scuttles can be added.
the kit parts have two circular blobs to represent the hook and pulley but the etch update set has this covered. Photo 1 shows the kit part before modification to allow the addition of the etch and the 2 etch parts used. the two parts fold to make a thicker pulley wheel. the two moulded on pulley wheels are just snipped off with a sharp blade. the etch was folded with tweezers, I did not glue the undersides as the glue used to attache them to the davit are will be enough to hold it all together.
I found it easer to attache the davit to the hull before attaching the pulley wheels.
The finished effect is excellentJasejase attached the following image(s): “Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to pause and reflect.” -Mark Twain
