Mike Turpin wrote:According to Longridge, the reinforcing ribs in the fighting top were usually 4 inch wide and about 4.5 inch thick at the rim, tapering towards the hole in the centre. That's a dimension of about 10 cm. When you scale this down, you get a figure of about 1.2 mm. so I would suggest that 2mm x 5mm is the wrong timber to be using.
Mike T Hi Mike, I too am having a problem with the size of the fighting top ribs. I think they are completely out of scale. I have searched the Internet for photos and diagrams of the fighting tops, and the best I've come up with are the Jotika HMS Victory plans. Jotika use 1.5 X 1.5 strips for the ribs. The Jotika kit is 1/72 scale so I am thinking of sanding down 1.5 X 1.5 strips to 1.2. This fits in with your post. (Stands back and waits for howls of outrage.)(not from you Mike!) Dave H

In that case you might also want to ponder changing the dimensions of your the hull planking and decking, but at the end of the day your building how you want it, which is down to personal choice and can't be a bad thing.

I appreciate your point Mr T, but the thickness of the hull and deck planking can't realy be seen like the fighting top ribs. Dave H

It is planking & decking width rather than thickness that I was talking about
