Markwarren wrote:Nice work Derek, you are certainly cracking on with this. Mark Hi Mark, Thanks for looking in and your comments, always appreciated. As this kit is 1991, Revell only had three difficulty levels and this one is level 2. That said you do have to take a little care as the instructions are at the bottom of basic and have a couple of minor errors. That said the fit of the parts is good for a kit of this age. Have a few more bits to fit along with the front wheels and then its down to the calculations for fixing what`s done to a base, to give the correct height to allow space for the rear axle and tyres to fit. (This is where things will slow down) Also thanks for the link on the voltage control unit, which should be here in a few days. I`ll discus that more on here when it arrives, but feel free to add your comments also. Regards delboy271155 (Derek) COME BACK GUY FAWKES "YOUR COUNTRY NEEDS YOU"

Hi All, Small update: Pic 1Have added the tie bar for the front steering, along with the longest steering rod I have ever seen from the side of the drivers cockpit all the way to the left front steering point(red arrows) Pic 2Some of the parts prepped for the next stages to follow. (Top to Bottom and Left to right) Electrics Box - Drivers Dash - Parachute packs. Rear drum - steering handles - Rear drum Front wheels and tyres (waiting white lettering). Rear drums just blacked up so not to show behind the rear wheels. More to come soon. Hi All, Well here`s the first update on how I hope to get this display working. There are numerous power supply units that supply a choice of dc voltage outputs but they are set outputs. For this project I need to be able to test the electric motor at a choice of speeds to ascertain which speed is best. One of our forum support team, Mark Warren, who has some experience in these matters suggested I try this item, (link below). It allows you to put an input voltage of between 5v and 32v and gives an adjustable output of anything you want from 0v to 30v all at the press of a couple of buttons. This means that I will be able to control the motor speed very accurately to get the best effect. At £15.99 its not cheap, but if I had to buy several motors and drive gears to get the effect I`m looking for it could cost me a lot more. Here`s the link to the suppliers web site: http://www.Droking.comAlso available via the likes of Amazon. There are fours buttons to control this unit. An output on/off Output Set and two buttons that display input/output and adjust the output voltage. Its small and measures 6.5 x 3.5 cms and is 1.5 cms high so doesn`t take up much space. One picture attached below. More updates soon. Regards delboy271155 (Derek) delboy271155 attached the following image(s): COME BACK GUY FAWKES "YOUR COUNTRY NEEDS YOU"

Hi Derek! Have a look at this youtube video, the parts probably work out to about a fiver! In theory, if you can use a variable speed gizmo to get the required speed, you could then measure the voltage output and just get a cheap power supply closest to that value. Although saying that, a cheap DIY circuit wouldn't cost any more than the power supply and would let you 'rev up' the model by turning the 'knob'! https://youtu.be/ipiDHD4YEMM

Glad you’ve got it Derek. The beauty about these boards is there simplicity to use, very controllable. Great as you will need a higher input voltage to run the smoke machine, and once they have been set to the selected voltage they keep their settings even when power off. I’ve put a couple of picture of the electronics I placed in my Podracer diorama. You will see I had 9v input running all the lighting throughout the model plus switches and then used these Drok converters to reduce the voltage to the sound board and the motor. BTW, you will see I have written 2v for the motors on the board, this nearly caused me disaster as it shook the model to bits. The voltage was then reduced to 0.2v. Can’t wait to see your smoke machine. Mark Markwarren attached the following image(s):

Thanks all for looking in and the input provided. @ Robin: Thanks for the info Robin. As I will probably have to turn the voltage supply to the motor down to a minimum to avoid massive vibration destroying the rear axle and maybe the whole display I`ve gone for the digital control unit. Variable resistors/potentiometers don`t have the degree of accuracy required in this case. There is also no need to rev the engine, as when these vehicles do a burnout to heat the tyres they just gun it until burnout complete. Still appreciate your input. @ Mark: Thanks for your input also. Your description was better than I could put together. I understand how they work, but putting it in writing maybe not so good. @ Phil: I just hope it works to my way of thinking and fulfils others expectations. More coming soon. Well here`s the next update. Whilst working out what`s needed for the mechanics/electrics of this build, I have started some work on the drop down body shell. The parts concerned are as follows: Body shell Inner panel which includes the body pivot point Two rear fins Spoiler Pic 1: I primed the main body shell and the inner panel then fixed them together, with the body pivot marked with arrows. Pics 2 - 4: I fixed the non-primed rear fins and spoiler. I fixed them non-primed so I could see better how good/bad the fit was. Answer = Perfect no filler required. Amazing for a kit of this age. Pic 5: A pic of the body prior to the second priming. That`s it for now. Coming up: Fixing the dash and upper steering gear. Tyre lettering. Choice of paint for the body shell. There is also one glaring omission from this kit. On the grounds that the body lifts from the front end and pivots at the rear end, they use a body prop to keep the body up when the driver gets in/out or there is a problem and they need to speak to the driver. Unfortunately one is not included so I will have to coddle something up, as when the model is not running it will then display everything under the body. Until next time. Thanks for the input and those who have looked in. With the rear fins and spoiler fixed and not a scrap of filler needed, I have primed the whole body shell. (Pic 1 below) I have also now finished the steering gear from the outer link to the dashboard steering box and then to the drivers handles. (Pic 2 below) So, what`s next? Have purchased the two paint colours for the body shell, but the dividing lines between them will take some work. That`s because there are decals that go over the point where the colour changes, so the colour change point has to be accurate so the decals have the correct colour showing through the clear bits and still lay in the correct place. Tyre lettering, my most dreaded job. Sourcing electric motor, replacement axle and drive gears. Hope to be back soon with the next update. Nice work Derek. Getting the decals to follow the colour change on the body will be a challenge, but a man of your means, will be a piece of cake. Mark

Hi All, Pretty sure I found the solution for the decal issue to get the main paint job in the correct place. Only issue is that when I get into thinking mode its hard to switch it off. Mind moved onto the dio set-up and thought, "Would a two car line up look better". (Just one smokin). Yep you guessed it , kit two on order with a negotiated discount of over 25% on ebay. 25% seller discount and still negotiated for some more. This kit (pic attached below) is a top fuel rear engined dragster that runs in a different class to the "Funny cars", but years ago when I visited Santa Pod they used to run challenge matches between these two classes of car. They may be of a slightly different racing era, but I`m putting that down to poetic licence. Heh, it gives me something more to do while I`m working on the smoking one and waiting for hardware to arrive. Smoke unit is expected in the next day or so. Update on that to follow. Happy Building. Markwarren wrote:Nice one Derek, don’t forget the nice young lady with the starting flag. Mark Now that brings back some memories. Not sure that would be allowed under forum rules. Additional issue is the scale as I`ve been looking for some figures to go with this. Especially with the burn-out vehicle as they always had a fire man in the super silver suit in case of a real fire problem. We`ll see. For just over £7 they look good quality, but having found the seller on ebay the p+p from America is too much at nearly £21. I`ll keep looking as I have plenty of time and may end up modifying some other figure as I will for the fireman.
