1959 The revolutionary Fidel Castro takes the oath as Cuban premier in Havana. His policy of giving the land back to the people infuriates the USA as much of the land is owned by the United fruit company (Del Monte) with a large number of senators on the Board of directors. Cuba would go on to have the most educated population of any country in the world and lead the world in in cures for some forms of meningitis.
1945 American paratroopers land on Corregidor, in a campaign to liberate the Philippines.
1942 Tojo outlines Japan's war aims to the Diet, referring to "new order of coexistence" in East Asia.
1940 The British destroyer HMS Cossack rescues British seamen from a German prison ship, the Altmark, in a Norwegian fjord.
1865 In the U.S.A., Columbia, in South Carolina, surrenders to Federal troops.
1862 Fort Donelson in Tennessee falls to Grant's Federal forces.
