Robin

Sorry for the delay in replying.

The fabric glue I purchased is called "sew quick fabric glue" made by a company called sewing box.

It's in a tube and is thicker than copdex but still appears to be a rubber type solution. It worked ok but as soon as you held the sail to the light you could see the glue. - looked awful.

Think one of the problems was the kit material was way to thin for some thing like this.

Just cut out my first sail and now deciding if I should use a cheap jml type sewing machine I got from eBay for £10 or hand sew - that needle looks way to dangerous to me.

Will try and post some pictures as these sails have a much different design with no edge bolt rope to worry about.

Kind regards

Tony

Hi Karl, you could be right about that glue being copydex, it was certainly a rubbery feel to it, unfortunately I have almost no sense of smell (gas leak? what's a gas leak?)BigGrin so I have no idea what it smelt like!

Hi there Birdaj2, be very carefull if using cheap sewing machines! Not because of the quality but because you need a stitch that produces a 'dotted line' on both sides of the material. I was looking at a couple of cheapie machines but they both produced a stitch called 'chain stitch', it looks good on the face of the material but take a look on the back and it does look like a huge loose chain of cotton running down the length of the sewn line. This is fine for clothes where the chain part is hidden inside but useless for sails where both sides of the material are in plain view!Crying
Have a look below, these are the Grimsby's sails which I had to sew completely by hand, it's a long boring task but it does end up with the stitches where you want them!Blink

Hope everyone is well.

Not made a great deal of progress with the Chinese Junk what with work, family illness and the limited build time I have being spent on my SotS build.

However I have now made the first of the 3 sails for this kit. In the end hand sewed as that mini sewing machine I think I mentioned an an earlier post looked far to dangerous to me (could see me stitching my fingers rather than he material Crying ).

The mast mast is now glued in but the formast and rear mast are loose at this stage. Couple of areas I am not overly happy with, one is repirable but the other I am stuck with:

1. Really not happy with my mast block rigging. Found this really fiddly and not at all happy with the result so on the couple of completed blocks will be looking to redo these at some stage.

2. The supplied cannon with this kit do not have wheels so I thought why not buy a couple of those Caldercraft cannon kits. Unfortunatly this revealed why the supplied cannon do not have wheels - add these and the cannon then sit too high to poke through the gun ports. So bakc to the original carriages but but add the brass turned Caldercraft barrels. The instructions give no rigging detail for the cannon so not sure how far I will try and improve that.

3. Rigging is going to be a pain as the instructions has a couple of very poor B/W pictures that do not show the rigging in any detail and there is the most basic of layout given on the big plan sheet that comes with the kit.

Anyhow a little more progress and a few pictures attached for your viewing.

Kind regards

Tony

Steve

Any thanks for the kind comments. Picked this one up cheap from eBay - a chap from Ireland was selling an unwanted wedding gift.

It's my first real build (apart from a part finished Chatham yatcht and a barely started DeAgostini Victory.

Not sure what I will get for my money but have a part started Golden Hind kit on its way from eBay. Just the keel and decks glued at this stage. Got it for a grand total of £48 which is a massive saving on the £190 I have seen it listed new.

Hope your builds are going well and many thanks again for your kind words.

Best regards

Tony

Hi Birdaj2

I'll second Stevie's comments, you have created a wonderfully clean build there, well done! Cool
From what I could find out about Chinese cannon (and that wasn't much) it seems some of them didn't have any wheels at all and some had very ornate animal shaped carriages. Those that did have wheels were probably either bought from westerners or were captured by Chinese pirates.
Looking at your cannon I wondered if cutting off the top tier of wood from the carriage sides (the bit with the groove in it for the barrel trunion or axle) and filing a new groove into the new top surface might lower the barrel sufficiently to allow you to add the carriage wheels underneath?
It seems with Chinese cannon you can design them any way you like and some Chinese vessel would have had something just like them! The carriages without wheels also appear to have had no rope tackle either, they were manhandled into position by the crew with strong iron spikes used like crowbars (must have made a real mess of the decking planks!)BigGrin

Looking great!

Tony, what a beautiful build, credit to your skills on producing something so neat, clean and inpirational.... Very very well done....BigGrin Drool Drool BigGrin

I am in a very similar position to yourself, work full time and look after a severely disabled wife. Took up this hobby to give me some me time in an evening and I simply love it, joined this forum and it is a decision I have never regretted, excellent members both novices and skilled builders alike and am happy to say I don't think there is a rivet counter amongst them.... Keep building and keep posting, I for one am very interested. Look forward to seeing a lot more from you.....Cool Cool

Many thanks for the kind comments.

Appreciate the info on the Chinese cannons so will see how I can incorporate some of these ideas into my build.

Enjoy your builds

Kind regards

Tony
