I would agree with Willie that you can bend the very thin planks between your thumb and finger (as per the launch link above) however I would recommend that you are very careful if you try to do it dry, because the fibres will tend to splinter when you get to the exteme curvature towards the bows. I personally would recommend that you at least moisten the plank when you try to bend it and apply the pressure gradually to get the sharper bends.

I have to agree with Mike on this. Whilst you can bend strakes dry between your thumb and forefinger dry, wetting them drastically lessens the risk of them fracturing. I'm not an expert model maker but I am a carpenter and understand the behaviours of wood fibres. Hardwoods have denser fibres and are much more likely to split or splinter.Cool

Revell USS Kearsarge
Titanic Lifeboat

I started off with nothing and I've still got most of it left.

having done my launch (see first wooden ship build) i would have to say my top tip would be to split the planks in two lenghtways. they are easier to fit and shape

Good morning shipmates..I tried splitting the planks but landed up with planks of slightly differing diameters...I now know where I went wrong on my launch planking, I am in the process of rectifying it...Confused

I found that placing the plank that is to be split onto a length of double sided sticky tape before cutting helps stop it from shifting around when you start cutting it.

Also, light strokes with your scalpel/craft knife, work better than trying to cut the wood in one pass.

I always soften my planking when using such a narrow gauge as in the launch - I boil the water and then leave for ten minutes
You do not need a parachute to skydive. You only need a parachute to skydive twice.

My first attempt at planking will be on the weekend. ive read lots of good advice and will crack on with the launch then. After a good run up. I posted this to 'gee' myself up for the task.I need time for the courage to build up lol. my cannon is done with slight weathering on it to wheels, pleased with it. Everything is my first attempt tho. Saving my money for a camera at mo. And not started my carronade as yet. Smaller run up required tho. Dont think much of the free tool kit. But hey thats why its free eh! Went and bought my own drill, knife aand files from 'games workshop'. Happy building shipmates
i dont know what weapons will be used in ww3 but ww4 will be sticks and stones.

Hi willie! BigGrin

Great minds think alike. I to have the Unimat 1, but with 1000mm long Machine Bed good idea to use the milling option better than using needle files and your launch looks good.
