cheers lads for all the comments, appreciated.
On with the crown, Had a bit of a disaster !! Chipped a small lump out of one of the top bands, pic 1, bit fed up about it but its not that easy to spot with the naked eye so going to have to live with it.

Inserted a small brass rod so as to fix it to the shield, tried it on the shield (no glue) to see how it looks, and it looks OK, although I would like to make the top bands thinner I think the risk is too great

BigGrin Hi wills
If your painting this then perhaps a little wood filler to fill the gap and filing back if its a natural look its as you say 'wont be notacable 'to any one but you on the model. Must say its outstanding work though

Thanks to everyone for the comments, much appreciated, onto the shield, I will be leaving all the carvings natural Andy so mabee the crown will be OK

Started carving the shield on the figurehead, been studying photos of the real thing and due to the complexity of the design my version will be semi abstract, and at the mo I`m not sure about the letters around the edge (may have to resort to greeking)
I started off by sticking some thin masking tape to form the cross, this divides the shield into four separate portions, and makes the carving so much easier, we now have four mini carvings, below is a few photos of my progress and although its nothing like the real thing I`m happy with the look

Cheers lads for all the compliments, appreciated, small update on the shield.
As I near the end of the centre squibbles my mind is on the lettering round the edges, I`m happy with the carving at the mo, so the question is do I risk having a go at them?? Or do I leave it blank?? (what do you think Alan ??)

This carving that you are doing is so good I struggle to say anything that hasn't already been said. With regards to the lettering why don't you practise on a scrap piece to see if you feel comfortable doing it,you have come so far that trying to do it straight off & risking all your hard work is dodgy,on the other hand if you feel ok with it then it will be the icing on the cake....at the end of the day only you can make the decision.
