Good evening from 'The Dockyard'. This week started off by deciding to improve the look of the port armoured box by increasing the taper on the bottom of it and adding a further taper to the top. The look of it now is much improved in my mind and more in keeping with the b/w photo I posted last week showing the side of U230's port armoured box. I also added filler to the radar mast housing and spent a bit of time blending that in once dry. I then constructed a lid for the box as I figured what was the point in having something to protect you if it has an open top, especially if they were designed to protect the lookouts from aircraft gunfire? I have spent plenty of time researching but could not find any photos of a U-boat fitted with armoured boxes shown from above, which was pretty selfish of them really not to think that modellers in the 21st century would want these pics! That completes this weeks update and also sees the completion of the armoured boxes. Admittedly a bit of the filler work needs dressing with a file and sanding stick but that will only take a few minutes. Next week I can move on to the next stage of modifying the conning tower with the addition of a wind and spray deflector. As it stands, the part-works supplied version of U96 represents an earlier version that was straight, whereas my model of U230 dating from 1943 was retro-fitted with an improved version with a more pronounced taper. As was common with U-boats, improvements were introduced continuously during the war and the wind and spray deflector was one of them. I say fingers crossed as I have a multitude of scratch building ahead of me and that always takes longer than you think. Good evening from 'The Dockyard'. This week I started off by making the wind and spray deflector which sits along the front edge of the conning tower. I started off by cutting evenly spaced slits around the edge of the conning tower with a razor saw. See attached photo.
