The final part of assembling the boiler is to use automotive filler to fill the gaps and smooth out the body. darbyvet attached the following image(s):

All that I need to do now is sand down the filler.
The instructions call for making rivets using a pounce wheel.I decided to use decal rivets and they will be applied just before painting.
On the real train the boiler was held together with rivets. In the reproduction a cast boiler was used since there is a lower pressure limit for a riveted boiler.
In fact it was not unusual in the early days of the central pacific railroad to have boiler explosions so you must have had to have some guts to be an engineer!!

Next up "the domes" This train comes with 2 domes; a steam dome and a sand dome. The steam dome collects steam from the boiler. This is then fed to the pistons at the front of the train. The sand dome contains......sand of course! Sand was used to help increase friction between the wheels and the rails. Both domes have a similar construction. They consist of wood formers, cast metal parts and a pices of tin for the body of the dome. The metal has to be bent. Here are the parts shown with the bending tool darbyvet attached the following image(s):

Here the parts are assembled using epoxy and I am using rubber bands to hold everything together.Once dry I removed the bands and used automotive filler to fill in the gaps between the tin and the cast metal. Finally I sanded down the filler to get a smooth overall surface darbyvet attached the following image(s):

Next job is to build the chimney. This has a wood frame with metal covering. Everything fit very well here although it was a little tricky bending the metal to fit around the frame. darbyvet attached the following image(s):

Nice work so far Carl and you're certainly making good progress with this superb build.
I'm not a train buff at all but I do love the Wild West - I have an Amati 1:10 'Wells Fargo' Stagecoach part built - and these old American locomotives look so cool with their funnel shaped chimneys and 'cow catcher' guards up front, so I'm watching this build with keen interest to see how it turns out? I wouldn't mind building one of these in the future to go with my stagecoach - might even add a 'Casey Jones' figure to the footplate? Used to love that TV series when I was a kid!!
(starts humming the tune to oneself) .... "Casey Jones, .... a-steamin' an' a -rollin' .... Casey Jones, on the Cannonball Express .... " HaHa!!
Keep up the good work and the updates Carl - well done.
Kev

The Kit arrived not long after I posted on here The weight of the box is I think some indication of the quality of the components and I am looking forward to getting started may even post a few pictures of my progress If the rest of their kits are like this I might treat myself to another one later I like the look of the Occre Costa Coach although I see Mr T has posted about a new release coming out shortly, The Dakota, and that has got to be worth a look The problem with some of these kits is where do I display them ???????!!!!!!! I looked at this kit and nearly bought it but decided on the Tamiya 1/6 fxe 1200 ( not in stock till the 10th but I am a bike man at heart, this looks like a great kit, maybe I've made a mistake. Ken's the name modeling's the game.

I don't know those Tamiya large scale bike kits are superb. I laid out all the parts for the Jupiter last night to sort out a painting schedule and it covered my whole kitchen table-And I don't like painting!!

I know what you mean about the number of parts There are parts made of wood, plastic, metal, Transfers to apply just as well there are plans which identify what is what but even so it is a bit of a needle in a haystack sometimes. Have you started making any of the pipework yet. There is a 1/1 scale plan to use I intend to where possible to use some copper rod I have for the less convoluted shapes as it can be difficult to straighten out the copper wire provided with the kit. As for painting I have been painting as I go along although I am not following the exact schedule in the plan. Whilst waiting for glue or paint to dry I move on to another part of the build. Need a steady hand for some of the painting I will post some more pictures in my build diary shortly Current Build:- [color=blue]Stash Avro Lancaster (Full Kit)plus some extra issues I picked up at a good price [color=blue]Built:- Norman Catapult by Mantua,Roman Catapult by Mantua,HMS Victory,HMS Victory XSection,Focker DB1,Bismark,English Carronade Titanic Lifeboat,American Civil War Gatling,Hummer,Sopwith Camel F1,Occre Jupiter ,OcCre Wagon, Latina Arab Dhow, Eaglemass Orrery OcCre Rogers 119 [color=red][color=red]RB7,OcCre Missippi River Boat, Model Airways Fokker DR1 OcCre London L>C>C 106 Ugears Scrambler, Ugears Hexapod Explorer UGears Off-Road Vehicle
