Love the look of those exhaust cans, a great improvement on the kit parts and will make a huge difference to the finished model? All looking good so far my friend, well done and keep it up!!
How are you finding this aircraft modelling Daran, enjoying it I hope?
Kev Hi all and thanks for looking in and your comments. Kev, I am really enjoying this plane building lark, but I am not happy with the cockpit tub at all. I have plenty of books for reference, and the metal upgrades for the control stick and the throttle controls are way over sized. But all is not lost, I have a plan!! Watch this space!!

So I decided to build up the radome, I could have used the kit part, this needed a lot of work and clean up, but this weighs 15g so the weight will stop the completed model "Tail Sitting".

Nice work Daran, that large lump of metal up front should go a long way towards keeping the nose wheel on the ground!!

Daran That weighted part is a good addition to the build and very well thught out as a nose weight. Sorry to hear you are not happy with some of the cockpit fittings but sure you will arrive at something you are happy with. Happy Modelling

Hi Tony and Kev, thanks for looking in.
Well I found a solution to my cockpit tub issues! I was very pleased with the resin jet exhaust set I have assembled so I decided to get their cockpit set, and I am over the moon!!! It is really well detailed, and comparing it to the photos I have, it is going to paint up really well and is light years ahead of the other set! Here are some comparison pics! Just need the hubble telescope so I can see the detail to paint it!!!

Hi Nem Just goes to show that some of the after market stuff can be shall we say of the best quality when compared to other stuff thats available but your replacement set is a far better looking set detail wise. That resin cockpit is a great improvement as you say Daran? Aires do some fantastic resin sets and the level of detail is usually awesome with just about every little detail accurate to the real thing? The cockpit set in my P-38 (which I'm still in the middle of painting by the way) is by Aires and I've found it to be 90+% right when compared to reference photos!!
Good luck with the painting my friend. you'll need it and don't forget to untangle your eyes and fingers before driving your car afterwards!!

In this evenings episode I have cut all the casting blocks off the cockpit set and dry assembled the tub, very impressed!! Next up is to dry assemble the exhausts and cockpit tub into the fuselage to test the fit, and tweak where needed, then on with the paint!!

Looking good Daran and with this hefty lump of resin AND the white metal radome, I think you're well on your way to stopping the dreaded 'tail sitter' syndrome - mind you there's those weighty resin exhaust cans up the tail end to consider?!!

You can buy lead weights from Dunnelm mill shops there used to weigh down curtains but are a good size for models if they need nose weight Current builds:-C57,Zero, Lamborghini Countach, Caldercraft HMS Agamemnon,Robi,R2-D2, MFH Cobra .

I really like the Aries sets both for their quality and price. I guess the issue you had here was that the original set was designed as an enhancement to existing parts rather than being a complete replacement. Eduard etch sets work on the same principle. Your replacement cockpit tub will make a massive difference to the overall look of the model and i wish you luck with the detailed painting. You should get lots of enjoyment paintng this. Look forward to your next update. Happy Modelling

Thank you all for looking in and your comments. I had forgotten how much fun planes were, and this is the largest scale I have built and also the first with detail sets, so I am a little nervous as there are some superb plane builders here! After trimming the tub to the instructions, it was time to dry assemble the the exhausts and the cockpit into the two halves of the fuselage. The exhausts fitted perfectly, but the tub and fuselage still need some trimming and sanding. But for the first try I am happy with the results! So I spent a relaxing afternoon sanding and trimming. Had to be really careful with the tub so as not to sand through the floor, but I managed to get it all to fit. Here are some pics to give you an idea of what I am doing with the Lightning. Hope you like it!!
