Some loose rope coils were placed of the rope ends, I wanted to make look like they were being used not on inspection.
The hinge assembly was my next focus, the supplied bras plate was to wide, possibly due to my sanding of the surfaces, Also it was a bit long, so I tried it down to the nail holes and filed the sides down to narrow it, before forming it over some scrap wire with flat pliers. once glued in place fine etch eyebolts were used for the other parts, the ring end was squashed flat to form the locking mechanism. the hinge being made by cutting half an etch eye bolt head off and gluing in place The chain was made from two pieces of very fine copper wire, that I striped out of some old cheap headphones a few years ago, the wire was twisted together to form something that looks a bit like chain once painted
Its a real challenge trying to scratch to scale but I have had a stab at it
I wanted the block to look rigged, so after some thought I used black plastic bead wire as this holds its shape better, not 100% happy but you get the idea I was trying to recreate
All the brass was re-blackend and bucket painted and a handle made from thicker thread.
The same thread was then used for the recoil break rope on the cannon. this was tied around the cannon threaded through the eyebolts fitted previously and then tied and bound with .05 black thread.
This left me with my last task and the reason my cannon is displayed not run out.
My last task was creating smoke as I wanted to show the cannon just fired and recoiled. I used a cotton ball for this. after watching a lot of cannons being fired to get the shape and colouring I threaded the cotton through the gun wall tufted it with tweezers primed it with snips. once happy a spot of PVA fixed it to the muzzle I used dark grey and burnt orange pastel powder applied by flicking the powder with a stiff brush to delicately ad some subtle depth to the smoke.
My first ever firing cannon, quite pleased with it.
And that completes the build
