How did I miss this one Karl, I've been drooling over this kit for months and here you are cracking on with it, I'm just waiting for my 'Lotto' numbers to come up (must be my turn soon) then I'll bang my order in! I'll be following your build with great interest, and I must admit that I was very suprised to see 'balsa' as the hull planking medium, you will have to be very carefull with with that to avoid damage, I hope you put the vineer on as I'm sure you'll get a better finish and it will be much stronger. (is there enough strip in the kit to do that?) Keep up the good work Karl (whoever you are!!! ) Jeff

Keep up the good work Karl (whoever you are!!! ) Jeff hi jeff and the rest of you kind gentlemen, there are two ways of planking this model, the first is to balsa plank, then cover with dope tissue, after a coat of diluted aliphatic glue, then primed and rubbed down and srayed paint.the second is to do all the above then before priming put 2nd planking(veneer) then prime and paint.not decided yet which way to go. Hi karl just an idea from my model aircraft days another way is to use nylon instead of paper as it will give more strength across the balsa Current builds:-C57,Zero, Lamborghini Countach, Caldercraft HMS Agamemnon,Robi,R2-D2, MFH Cobra .

arpurchase wrote: Hi karl just an idea from my model aircraft days another way is to use nylon instead of paper as it will give more strength across the balsa hi andy, yes I had thought of using several different medium's including silk.fibre glass, and even carbon fibre, what I wanted was a normal model, that was reasonable enough to build fairly easily, not a tank busting bullitproof boat that would stop a torpedo in it's tracks, so I going for a second layer which is supplied and is .8mm.x6mm basswood, which will strengthen up nicly, will put up some pics tomorrow. and thanks for the idea, all comments welcome. Hi Karl...did the balsa come with the kit or was it your idea to use it as a different medium for planking?? I like the idea very much, and the idea varying materials as a stengthener? I'm very impressed mate...very impressed in deed!!
P.S...how's the non smoking coming along???

hi john,non-smoking still on,just,as the balsa and basswood both are supplied, along with tissue(modelspan)so not really my idea, but this is the way I chose, seemed more of a regular way to go. Current builds: SotS, USS Consitution, San Felipe, D51 loco, HMS Surprise, RB7, Arab Dhow, Jotika HMS Victory Completed builds: HMS Pickel, Thermopylae, Mississipi river boat, Mary Rose, Cutty Sark, San Francisco II, HMS Victory x5, Titanic Lifeboat, Panart HMS Victory Launch, Hachette Titanic, Virginia Schooner, Endeavour Longboat. http://www.model-space.com/gb/

Hi Karl
Would the reason for using the tissue and dope method be to create an overall smooth surface which is what the hull of a relatively modern steel hulled ship would have? If you create a planked surface it will be less authentic?
Just trying to understand these methods of construction.

hi mike and Ian,yes mike the tissue/dope is to have a smooth finish, but put onto the balsa it would susceptible to dents and digs,so I will sand seal and rub down several times and then tissue with further rub downs to get the smooth surface. Current builds: SotS, USS Consitution, San Felipe, D51 loco, HMS Surprise, RB7, Arab Dhow, Jotika HMS Victory Completed builds: HMS Pickel, Thermopylae, Mississipi river boat, Mary Rose, Cutty Sark, San Francisco II, HMS Victory x5, Titanic Lifeboat, Panart HMS Victory Launch, Hachette Titanic, Virginia Schooner, Endeavour Longboat. http://www.model-space.com/gb/

Hi Karl the nylon i was talkin about is very light 1 oz per sq/m, so it will give strength but not make it torpedo proof It will also dry more opaque than tisue so easyer to see whats underneath Current builds:-C57,Zero, Lamborghini Countach, Caldercraft HMS Agamemnon,Robi,R2-D2, MFH Cobra .
