Step 16
Using the 0.5 x 4mm decking strips, I covered the bulwarks of the lower deck. After the glue dried completely, the bulwarks were sanded smooth and painted with Vallerjo Fire Red. The bulkheads fore and aft of the lower deck were painted with Vallerjo Black. The gun ports were then framed in with the 0.5 x 2mm strips painted with Vallerjo Red. This completed step 16. Keep on modeling... Mark mwstratton attached the following image(s): Currently: Soliel Royal, Deag DC-3, DeAg Ford Shelby Mustang GT 500

Step 17 I started by locating 2 – 2 x 2mm strips. I milled these strips with AL's micro shaper to make baseboard for the lower deck bulwarks. Cut this molding to fit around the bulwarks and ribs, making miter cuts to turn the corners. The pieces were then glued in place and set aside to dry. Step 18 In step 18 the lower deck cannons were assembled. I started building the gun carriages by attaching Part 40b to the narrow end of part 40a at a 90% angle. Parts 41a & b were then glued to the long edges of part 40a with the etched line facing out. Using a round needle file, I made 2 grooves in the bottom of part 40a to accommodate the axles. 2 20mm lengths of brass rod to form the axles. The axles were centered in the grooves and super glued in place. Wheels were then fitted and glued on the ends of the axles. Using the fret that contained the wheels, I cut the axles to their final length. The gun elevation wedge (part 44) was glued in place centered between the sides of the carriage and 1.5mm from the rear edge. The entire gun carriage was painted with Vallerjo red. Repeat the process to make a total of 10 guns. The rest of step 18 will be finished later. I am awaiting arrival of some burnishing fluid to finish the cannons. Step 19 will have to wait till the cannons are finished. Till next time... Mark mwstratton attached the following image(s): Currently: Soliel Royal, Deag DC-3, DeAg Ford Shelby Mustang GT 500

Step 20 Using 1 x 3mm strips, I cut 3 10mm lengths to make the ammo box. Each end of these pieces were beveled to 30% and glued together in a triangle. The ammo box was then painted with Vallerjo red. Repeat the process to create a total of 4 ammo boxes. Cannon balls will be added after they are treated with burnishing fluid. Done with this step for now. Mark. mwstratton attached the following image(s): Currently: Soliel Royal, Deag DC-3, DeAg Ford Shelby Mustang GT 500

Step 21
In this step I fabricated the 3 hold hatch covers for the lower deck. The 2 x 5mm planks were used for this. 5 16mm lengths of plank were cut and glued up to form a 16 x 25mm cover. The next one was made with 4 17mm lengths of plank ending up with a hatch cover measuring 17 x 20mm. 0.5mm was sanded off of each 17mm side to reach a final dimension of 17 x 19mm. The final cover was made with 5 lengths of plank measuring 22.5mm for a final size of 22.5 x 25mm. Using the 1 x 3mm stripe, frames were built around all 3 hatch covers. They were then painted with Vallerjo fire red. This step will be finished after the eye bolts are finished in the burnishing fluid. Step 18 (cont)
Well I got tired of waiting for my burnishing fluid to arrive so decided to paint the guns after all. Boy I sure don't like not having a local hobby shop when I need something quick. I started off by feeding the rigging lines through the holes in the sides of the carriages before mounting the cannons to avoid the cramped quarters of the gun deck. Next I fitted the cannons to the carriages and glued the brackets to the carriage to hold the barrel. This process was repeated to complete 10 gun assemblies. Now I can finally mount them to the deck. Mark mwstratton attached the following image(s): Currently: Soliel Royal, Deag DC-3, DeAg Ford Shelby Mustang GT 500

Step 19
First thing I accomplished in this step was to drill a 1mm hole next to each side of the gun ports according to the instructions. Brass eye bolts were cut down to form hooks, painted black and super glued into these holes. The gun assemblies were then fitted to the deck with the barrels protruding about 6mm through the ports. The rigging lines were then tied off to the hooks and the knots were super glued to hold them. Thanks for checking in... Thanks Alan. Step 20 (cont) 9 cannonballs were glued into each ammo box and allowed to dry. They were then glued between the cannons. This step is now finished. Mark mwstratton attached the following image(s): Currently: Soliel Royal, Deag DC-3, DeAg Ford Shelby Mustang GT 500

Step 21 (cont) I took 12 eye bolts and 12 rings and joined them. They wre them painted black. While the paint dried, I drilled a 1mm hole in each corner of the 3 hatch covers. The eye bolts were then glued into each of the holes. The hold hatches were fitted and glued in place over the openings in the lower deck.
