SUNDAY 10th November 2019 - HARLEY DAVIDSON FLSTF “FAT BOY” UPDATE ON PACK 11 ISSUESFor anyone following this build diary you will recall that I mentioned a number of quality issues with the parts supplied in pack 11. My real concern however was being told by customer services that in terms of spares there was nothing available to replace (in particular) the paint damaged frame half. I was asked to email my concerns and an answer would be obtained from the head office in Italy. The reply I received was as follows: “Please note that it was decided by Harley Davidson that the license is not to be renewed, and this model is slowly being phased out of our range.
We will do everything in our power to ensure we can fulfil your requests”And what they did do to resolve my issue was to re-send the complete Pack 11 again. SO, on that basis I now have a decent frame half, the horn I have replaced with the new part and there is no chrome missing from that. And the Super Glue can be put away because the foot rest in this pack is not broken. Still some way to go with this build so just hoping that I get through to the end with not major issues. PACK 12STAGE 37 – THE HEADLIGHTPICTURE 1In this stage we get the The Headlight Body containing a bulb and its cable, The Reflector, The Lens Ring, The Lens. The instructions also refer to a Type “N” screw being included but again with this pack it’s a whole bag of mixed screws. PICTURES 2First part of the assemble is to push the bulb through the hole in the reflector then to line up the reflector posts with the 2 holes in the headlight body. Needed to angle this in order to see exactly how to line up this part and then its just a press fit to get the 2 parts connected. PICTURES 3 & 4Now this is interesting because they tell you to match the Peg in the Lens Ring (arrowed) with the indent (arrowed) in the Lens itself. All seems logical However it did cause an issue which I will explain. PICTURE 5Once the lens is inserted in the Lens Ring its fitted to the Headlight Body by lining up 2 “pegs” and giving the whole thing a slight turn in order to lock the 2 parts together. Now that is were I noticed an issue. Having locked the 2 parts in place the markings in the lens itself were twisted off to one side. To my eye it looks like the indent in the lens itself has been made incorrectly. Not a major issue and it was easy to correct the angle of the lens itself so that the “etchings” ran horizontal when looking at the head-light from the front. birdaj2 attached the following image(s): Happy Modelling

STAGE 38 – THE FRONT FORKPICTURES 6In tis stage we get the Half of the Frame and a further bag of mixed screws. None of this is required in this stage so its stored safely away until called for in some future build stage. For this part of the build we go searching through the stored parts and recover: PICTURE 7
The front forks assemble from stage 30 PICTURE 8The Springs and cover caps from Stage 10 PICTURE 9The Headlight Mount from Stage 36 PICTURE 10We start by placing the 2 springs over the fork ends PICTURE 11The Headlight Mount is then slide down over the forks and the 2 caps pressed over the ends and secured by 2 x type “F” screws. PICTURE 12And this is what it looks like when complete. birdaj2 attached the following image(s): Happy Modelling

STAGE 39 – FITTING THE HEADLIGHTPICTURE 13In this stage we get a moulded stand that will be used to support the finished model. I am rather pleased this is included because this is going to be a very heavy model when complete and motorbikes in model form (never had a real one to comment) never like standing on their side supports without tipping over. And you would certainly not want this tipping over. Again, for now, this part is stored away until called for in some future stage. PICTURES 13A, 13B & 13CIn this stage all we need to do is pass the headlight cable through the larger hole in the headlight support and then secure the headlight from the rear of the support using a Type “N” screw. The very last part of this section is to connect the Headlight lead to the supplied circuit board. PICTURES 14 & 15We were provided with an addendum sheet 2 packs back to advise that the circuit board we will be using differs slightly in design to that shown in the instruction manual. This circuit board appears to just be a wire routing board and contains no electronics. The board with all the circuitry on appears in a later pack. PICTURE 16While this board has a slightly different layout to that shown in the instructions you cannot go wrong as there is only 1 2 pin socket into which the 2-pin plug on the headlight plugs. And for this pack that is all we need to do this time around. A case now of packing everything away safely until the next pack arrives. birdaj2 attached the following image(s): Happy Modelling

TUESDAY 31st December - HARLEY DAVIDSON FLSTF “FAT BOY” PACK 13STAGE 40 – FIXING THE CIRCUIT BOARDPICTURE 1In this stage we get: The Back Cover of the Headlight Body The Front Axle The Handlebar Locking Bar. We also need the handlebars from Stage 17 and The Front Forks from Stage 39. PICTURE 2Initially I had a bit of concern regarding the length of the heat shrink used to cover the various cables coming from the handle bar light units and switches. As can be seen here the left cable there is a lot more red and yellow wiring showing than there is on the right-hand cable. I did intend to redo the heat shrink but in the end this proved unnecessary. PICTURES 3 & 4So, all we need to do here is insert the 2 pegs on the handle bars into the 2 holes on the front forks. PICTURES 5 & 6Working on the back of the assemble we now insert the cables into the circuit board. PICTURE 7“Game Time” again. This time searching out 2 x F screws and 1 x B screw from the variants we now have. PICTURE 8We use the Type B screw to fix the circuit board into place. We then need to thread the 2 Ribbon cables across so they emerge from the slot in the lower right corner of this assemble. The remaining part of this stage is to use the 2 x F screws to secure the handle bars in place using the Locking bar supplied with this stage. birdaj2 attached the following image(s): Happy Modelling

STAGE 41 – COMPLETING THE HANDLEBARSPICTURE 9In this stage we get: Coil Housing Battery Box Battery Lid Coil Cover Battery Strap None of this is required in this stage so its stored safely away until called for in some future build stage. PICTURE 10For this part of the build we need The Back Cover of the Headlight Body from stage 40 and 2 x F screws. PICTURE 11We need to ensure all of the cables are correctly routed with both the ribbon cables feeding out of the slot in the lower right-hand section and the handle bar cables coming in at the lower points as shown. PICTURE 12Attached to the back cover is the on/off switch and that cable also has to exit lower right. PICTURE 13The back plate is fixed in place using the 2 x F type screws. The on/off switch is then pressed into place. birdaj2 attached the following image(s): Happy Modelling

STAGE 42 – THE BATTERY AND COIL CASEPICTURE 14In this stage we get: The Oil Tank with attached cables and circuit board. 2 x Type P Screws These parts are not used during this stage of the build so are stored away safely until required. PICTURE 15What we do now need are all of the parts shown here from Stage 41. PICTURE 16We start by press fitting the 2 parts of the battery together. PICTURE 17The battery strap is then wound around the battery and the 2 clips joined together. PICTURES 18 & 19We then take the 2 halves of the coil housing and press fit these together. Both the assembled battery and coil housing are then stored away safely until required in some future stage of the build. birdaj2 attached the following image(s): Happy Modelling

STAGE 43 – THE SIDE STANDPICTURE 20In this stage we get: The Side Stand The Stand Spring. Again, at this point nothing to do with these parts – just store away until required at some future date. And for this pack that is all we need to do this time around. A case now of packing everything away safely until the next pack arrives in the New Year. birdaj2 attached the following image(s): Happy Modelling

SATURDAY 18th January 2020 - HARLEY DAVIDSON FLSTF “FAT BOY” PACK 14MORE PROBLEMSWhile Pack 14 actually arrived near on 2 weeks ago I have been waiting for a replacement due to the poor state of the Rear Fender that was sent. PICTURES 1 to 4As can be seen in these pictures the part is scratched (although looking at the picture I have taken the scratch looks more like something stuck to the part but trust me it is a deep scratch. The part has also ended up with more that is fair amount of dust in the varnish coat. While customer services have again been very good in replacing the WHOLE pack 14 because there are no spares available it is disappointing that I seem to have had so many issues with these silver parts over the months. To the point now that I will not be sorry when the build of this one is complete. birdaj2 attached the following image(s): Happy Modelling

STAGE 44 – THE REAR SUSPENSIONPICTURE 5In this stage we get: The Rear Suspension Unit. PICTURES 6 & 7The is part is made of a hard plastic but is somewhat of a “Strange” piece. It’s the first part of the model I have seen stamped up with a country of origin (MADE IN P.R.C) Its also odd in that the tops of the cylinders are metal pegged into the cylinders and when you tap these cylinders with a finger nail is sounds and feels like there is something inside – possibly a spring. However, neither end of this part actually moves so it makes me wonder why they would go to the trouble of adding springs to these cylinders when this is a none functioning part. Anyhow for now all we do is store this part away until its needed at some future stage. birdaj2 attached the following image(s): Happy Modelling

STAGE 45 – FUEL TANK COVERPICTURE 8In this stage we get: Leather Cover for the Fat Boy Fuel Tank Four Type N Screws PICTURE 9We also need to dig out the Fuel Tank from Stage 21. PICTURE 10All that is needed to be done in this stage is to align the 4 pegs on the cover with the 4 holes in the fuel tank. PICTURE 11We then use the 4 supplied type N screws to secure the cover to the tank. And that is as much as we need to do in this stage. birdaj2 attached the following image(s): Happy Modelling
