ISSUE ONE PLANKING

Hi Team the next thing to do is fit the planks, Port and Starboard (left and Right)
I have used pins at the Bow and Stern, but I will take them out when the glue is dry, I do not like to use permanent trenails in any hull that I plank, if the planks are bent naturely then adhesive is sufficient in my opinion, whether the ship be the Victory or this small Longboat.:-

I have now soaked 4 planks 2 for Port 2 Starboard It is important to plank both sides equally so that the Hull does not twist.

When I naturelly bend more than one plank at a time I fit kitchen towel between the clamps and the wet planks, this soaks up moisture and protects the wood from clamp marks.

I will now leave these planks about 12 hours to dry, then I will shape and fit them and glue in place. (AT THE MOMENT THE PLANKS ARE NOT PERMANENTLY FITTED)

Now the Planks are dry, you can see they are perfectly formed to the shape of the Hull ready for trimming and fitting. This way of bending planks takes longer, but in my opinion is more rewarding.

I decided to soak another 2 planks and while wet place and shape them along side the Gardboard planks.

All 4 planks in this area have not been fitted permanently this will be done when they are dried to shape:-

Thanks again Kev for the encouragement, as you know modelling is a journey not a destination, I also say to people, there is no such thing as failure only outcomes and results, this is a very slow process but very rewardingBigGrin Cool

Hi Sean yes you can use a hair dryer and people do with good results, as people use plank benders (the heat type)and soldering irons etc.

but I prefer to soak the timber then let it dry and form naturaly (with a little help from my clamps an pins)its slow but I believe it works better for me, other people will have a system that works for them, and then there will be new people, who if they see examples of all the different ways of bending planks, will find one that thy feel comfortable
with.

I am glad you asked the question, and I hope my answer is of help to youBigGrin Cool
