Hi, i have taken the lower deck boards from issue 11 and gently sanded the slots, marked the centre points and drew lines from the centres of the slots for the rib formers. I now need help, reassurance and confirmation I have built the hull correctly so far. The pictures show the deck sections pushed in, some easy and a few were tight, but pushed onto the rib formers as far as they go. The sections do not fit properly. Should I sand the slots until they do fit and line up, or do i need to do something more drastic???     Hopefully I have not got the hull and rib formers completely out of line. hi claret,have you checked my diary?? explains that you will need to adjust slots.start at the bow,and make sure you get the first two pieces of the deck correct.you may have to sand the front edges of the bow end to get them square,when that's done,line up the next piece by widening the slots slightly.if you have too much cutting to do then something is seriously wrong,you may have to remove the balsa,then place the decks in,and redo the balsa,sounds drastic,but everything MUST be square.with hind sight of these problems,it would have been better to have laid the lower deck before you put in the balsa,I had slight adjustment to do,but mike (mwg) had no such problems Current builds: SotS, USS Consitution, San Felipe, D51 loco, HMS Surprise, RB7, Arab Dhow, Jotika HMS Victory Completed builds: HMS Pickel, Thermopylae, Mississipi river boat, Mary Rose, Cutty Sark, San Francisco II, HMS Victory x5, Titanic Lifeboat, Panart HMS Victory Launch, Hachette Titanic, Virginia Schooner, Endeavour Longboat. http://www.model-space.com/gb/

Hi Karl, Thanks for the reply and advice. I did read your build post and gave me a little bit of reassurance that I might have to fettle the decking slightly, but how much? They do not seem to be out to much, but I am worried it will cause problems later in the build. As a side note, love the work you have done with the planking on the ships launch. Thanks again. Hi Claret, just as Karl has said in his post... I too had to make minor adjustments to a couple of the rib cutouts but for me it was more to relieve a tight fit to ensure nothing was getting forced... Think you will need to see how much adjustment needs to be done before deciding your course of action.... Will be watching your progress...  Alan

i had the same problem but it was only slightly out of place, if you can find a way to hold them in place so they are aligned then nail them into place, shouldn't be a problem as far as i know. Processing - Progressing

Morning, I have added a couple more planks to the launch, taking it slowly and trying not to glue my fingers to the planks!! I have used hot water to soften and form the planks into shape.  Claret Also working on:

Hi, I have managed to fit the lower deck without any drastic rework. Some sanding and filling of the slots was required. The middle section was the guilty party, but now in place with glue and some long pins I had (actually were for securing model railway track down). the pins were long, thin and very sharp at the pointed end. i measured everything twice and one set of rib formers is about 0.5mm out. the heights of the second deck supports are almost the same for each pair, so feeling a little happier and confident everything is okay. Hi Dominic, Thanks for the message and identifying the problem. It has been a steep learning curve, and for the investment, I want my build to be 'perfect'. I do not relish the thought of cutting all the balsa out, so am tempted to buy back issues of all the issues that include the keel, ribs and bottom deck. I have given it a lot of thought and know where I went wrong and have some ideas to improve the way I built it. Again, thanks for your input. Hi Claret before you soak the ship try steaming her with a wallpaper steamer, and also over the spout of a kettle before you try somthing drastic like submerging it in water, use that as a last resort, I have always had success with the steaming method, it may take a little longer but it works. You can free off the majority of the balsa by cutting down the side of the ships ribs while she is resting on her side. I am not going to give up, if I am going to finish this model I want to finish it right! I must say I am totally humbled by the support, constructive criticism and help on this forum. Hi, Busy this weekend, on my model. Bit the bullet and cut most of the balsa infill out, but got away with leaving the front section infilled. All the rib formers were removed using boiling water and placed in a press to unsure no warping. I took my jig apart and reassembled it using more brackets and ensuring a tight fit and the false keel was perpendicular to the jib base. The problems I had was, the keel was out, not perpendicular and the rib formers were not true. This time I used sections of wood, firstly glued only to the false keel, but positioned so the rib formers were 90 degs to the false keel for each rib former.   Once the glue has set, I glued the rib formers into place, ensuring they were level and used more sections of wood on the other sides. Doing it this way, I only had to get one plane set each time. I let the glue set before the next stage. Claret Also working on:

I now put the bottom deck down and they 'fell' into place perfectly. Totally different from my first attempt. they were glued and pinned into place.  Also working on:
