Yep you really can beat the 'special relationship' we have, and did you know in the 1st war we had to equip the US army before it got to the trenches because their kit was not up to it, one guess who picked that bill upGlare

Who picked that bill up? Now let me think ... that's a difficult one!

Did you see that documentary on the TV recently about the American 'War Plan Red' (How to declare war on Britain in the 1930's and steal Canada!) It seems that the US demanded that Britain pay back all it's war loans in one go. Britain was unable to do that because both the Belgians and the French completely renaged on the millions that we had lent them during the Great War!
There's a great quote that comes up periodically whilst playing Empire on my PC

"We English are very good at forgiving our enemies, it releases us from the obligation of liking our friends"! BigGrin BigGrin BigGrin

(and with friends like we've got......)

Brilliant thread Jase!

Glad you enjoy the little bits of history,

As somebody once said 24hours is a long time in politics and 'friends' change with need. In the case of British history 'friends' has often meant 'economic opportunity'

Wonder which way the people of the falkland islands will vote today? and i wonder why two nations are so interested in the island - could just be it near possible oil reserves?!BigGrin

I reckon it'll be between 95-98% in favour of staying British. Flapper
As for the oil reserves, politically speaking it must have a lot to do with it nowadays but historically speaking, the Falklands were discovered (and claimed) by a British navy Captain, the original colonists (British) were ejected by the Spanish and some years later we returned the compliment and ejected the Spanish colonists. At the time there was no Argentina, the territory which is now that country was still under Spanish rule so the Argentines have no claim on the islands whatsoever. By their rules the Italians should be able to claim the UK after all, it's covered with Italian or should that be Roman artifacts!!BigGrin BigGrin

1757 British Admiral John Byng is executed by a firing squad on board HMS Monarch for neglect of duty. The failure to hold Fort St Philip (during the battle of Minorca) initially caused public outrage among fellow officers and the country at large. Byng (who had maid a carrier of avoiding difficult posts) was brought home to be tried by court-martial for breach of the Articles of War, which had recently been revised to mandate capital punishment for officers who did not do their utmost against the enemy, either in battle or pursuit. The court martial acquitted him of personal cowardice and disaffection, and convicted him only for not having done his utmost as Byng had chosen not to pursue the superior French fleet, instead deciding to protect his own. Once the court determined that Byng had "failed to do his utmost", it had no discretion over punishment under the Articles of War, and therefore condemned Byng to death. The whole affaire was a low point in Royal navy History.
