This crew member has no cards as they're laid out on the table. In my mind they are all playing 'Pontoon'. This is an amazing level of detail, Phil. All you need now are some glasses and a bottle of whiskey, a pencil and score sheet for the cards. Apologies, no alcohol when on duty. Or how about a crib board? OK, I'm being silly now. Still a brilliant build diary, well done. Chris

Good morning from 'The Dockyard'. So this week i made a start on fitting lighting to the completed compartments. Initially i was in two minds whether too or not, but after fitting out the Galley, i noticed how dark it was, so that was the impetus i needed. I bought a lighting kit, designed for 1/48 scale u-boats, quite a while ago. All the resistors were pre-fitted to each nano LED, of which there are 15 in the kit along with one green and one red. I also purchased some marine style 3d printed light fittings with lens covers. The attached photo shows the base of the one of the light fittings, painted white and a nano LED held in place with double-sided tape. The light was tested beforehand to check it worked. The wires entering the light fitting were given a small blob of glue as extra fixing and the lens cover fitted, again, with glue, not superglue or PVA , but a crafting glue that can be easily separated if needed. The wiring for all of the lighting will be routed down into the battery compartment below the Junior Rates Accommodation space. Some of the nano LED's had to have extra lengths of wire spliced onto them to make up their length and heat shrink added. The attached photo shows the wiring for 4 lights routed, ready for connection. The 4 lights are for the Aft Torpedo compartment, Engine Room, Galley and Junior Rates Accommodation space. Sticky Wickett attached the following image(s): Completed projects: 1/43 scale Bedford HA van / 1/43 scale MG TD sports car Current projects: 1/48 scale U-boat [U230] Future projects: 1/148 scale railway diorama / 1/50 scale R/C Volvo F89 logging truck / 1/148 scale Thunderbirds Fireflash

The attached photo shows the wires for the 4 lights routed to a chock block. The chock block will eventually be covered over with a plastic box shape and made to look like locker storage, but not until all of the lighting is completed. Lighting for the rest of the u-boat will be routed in the same way to another chock block next to this one, whereby both their feeds are routed down to the Battery Compartment below. Bullet connectors will be fitted to the ends of these feeds so that the switch and batteries that power the nano LED's can be easily disconnected. The wires and connectors in the Battery Compartment will eventually be hidden by scratch-built u-boat batteries. The rest of the lighting will be added as each of the remaining compartments get fitted out. Only then will i finish off the overall look and hide away the chock blocks etc. That concludes this update, next week i move onto the main focus of the u-boat; the Control Room. Good morning from 'The Dockyard'. So this week i started on fitting out the Control Room, the nerve centre of all submarines. I began by soldering together the part works supplied etched brass that makes up the hull infra-structure. Sticky Wickett attached the following image(s): Completed projects: 1/43 scale Bedford HA van / 1/43 scale MG TD sports car Current projects: 1/48 scale U-boat [U230] Future projects: 1/148 scale railway diorama / 1/50 scale R/C Volvo F89 logging truck / 1/148 scale Thunderbirds Fireflash

The infra-structure looking from another angle. At this point i put it to one side and will come back to it during the final stages of fitting out the Control Room. I enjoy the soldering side of things and intend to more on future model making projects. I then turned my attention to the bulkheads, fore and aft. In the attached photo, they have both been painted in white and sky grey with a matt black lower edge painted around the bulkhead door opening. The aft bulkhead completed. 50% of this was part-works supplied, which looked very basic and did the bulkhead no justice at all, so the other 50% that you can see i scratch-built; junction boxes, pipes, valve handwheels, an ammeter gauge, all pin-washed to bring out their detail.
