6. Shrouds. Part 01 Onto the rigging. This is my favorite part of building model ships. Fitted the masts and bowsprit. I have not glued them in – the rigging will hold them in place. The instructions suggest we start with Plan 2 (Stays), but all my literature suggests fitting shrouds first. So here goes… I fitted the shrouds and back stays using the 0.8mm black thread for the lower parts of the mast (below the fighting tops) and 0.5mm thread for anything above that. I basically followed the Victory instructions. (HMSV Dual Pack 10 DL, Page 396) I made a jig to using 0.8mm brass wire (left over from the Victory) Once the deadeyes were secure, I fitted the lanyards. I did a basic tension to align the masts but will tension them again once the ratlines are installed. I’m not sure how to describe just how tight I tensioned the shrouds, basically tight enough to maintain their shape – but not as tight as to bend any of the mast unnaturally. I did a Heath Robinson on the lashings this time round: - position the deadeye and tie up the shroud with a loose half hitch to keep the end out of the way. The waxed thread maintains its shape well. - Tie the thinner thread directly above the deadeye with a half hitch. - Run some glue over the knot and up the shroud. - Wrap 12 times and secure with another half hitch. I wrapped the upper shrouds with 8 wraps. - Apply white glue to the entire wrapping & cut off ends when dry. Garth attached the following image(s): "Measure twice, cut once!!!" Finished!!! Hi All, Just a small update today. To make the catharpins, I tacked a piece of 2 x 1mm strip to the shrouds with superglue. I painted them black and lashed with some fine black thread. Blackened the hooks provided and fitted the futtock shrouds according to the instructions. I have only taken photos of the main mast, but the same applies to all the shrouds. I also fitted the futtock staves, but unfortunately don’t have a pic of them Kind regards, Garth Garth attached the following image(s): "Measure twice, cut once!!!" Finished!!! 7 Stays - Part 01 As with the shrouds, I used 0.8mm black thread for stays below the fighting tops, everything else I used 0.5mm black thread. Otherwise everything is as per the instructions. I used the deadeye spacer for all their lanyards. Garth attached the following image(s): "Measure twice, cut once!!!" Finished!!! HMS Victory, Current build: Black Pearl. Garth That is some really nice work on that rigging. It “scares me” because so many kits Give very little guidance for this so important part of the build. Tony Happy Modelling

Tony Hi Tony, Thank you for looking in. You are so right about that. Fortunately I have built the Victory and their instructions are flawless!!! Even though the Hachette rigging instructions are for furled sails and pretty basic rigging - I feel like we have been thrown into the deep end. As per my earlier rant, they have pages on how to assemble the lanterns, repeated three times, but only two or three pages on the rigging. Whereas the Victory had around 20 issues. Never the less, I have really enjoyed all the reading up and planning, and have learnt so much in the process. Kind regards, Garth "Measure twice, cut once!!!" Finished!!! Stays Part 02 If you are building from my build, remember the jib stay and I also added a stay from the tip of the bowsprit to the fore top mast. I deviated from the instructions when fitting stay No 1 & 2. They have us use an etched hook, but I chose rather to make a loop use a lanyard to secure them. it helped to be able to tension them. Next up – the ratlines… Kind regards, Garth Garth attached the following image(s): "Measure twice, cut once!!!" Finished!!! HMS Victory, Current build: Black Pearl. 08 The Ratlines Probably one of the most tedious jobs when rigging are the ratlines. There are a number of ways of attaching them. On my first wooden ship, a Billings kit – Meta, I put small dots of white glue on each shroud and simply laid the thinner ratline across. The viscosity of the white glue held it in place. Not the best method, but most definitely the fastest. Bearing in mind I was only 18 years old at the time. The next method is to stich them on, as per the Victory instructions. The method that I finally chose was the conventional method of tying nots. It is not as bad as I first imagined, once you get into it, it really goes quite fast. Alan posted a link to a Youtube vid on this. I followed his instructions. https://forum.model-spac...amp;m=103811#post103811

The only thing I can add to this, is to make sure that you are really comfortable and angle the model in such a way that you take the strain off your arms as much as possible. I gave the lanyards one last tension and tied them off on the bindings. Glad this is done. The ratlines are the last of the tedious jobs left. Plain sailing form here on… Famous last words Kind regards, Garth Garth attached the following image(s): "Measure twice, cut once!!!" Finished!!! HMS Victory, Current build: Black Pearl.
