Good evening from 'The Dockyard'. Thanks for all the comments gents, much appreciated and glad you like the updates. So, more work on the Control Room. This week was painting the crew and a few other bits of equipment. The attached photo shows the Commandant, who will be manning the sky periscope, hence his pose with the periscope body in the same picture. I drilled out his hands slightly so that he actually holds on to the handles. The next step was to make up the watch keepers bench. It was just an l-shaped bit of part-works plastic and the instructions said to paint the top beige. Beige! No thanks! That concludes this update. Big week next week, as i hope to get the Control Room finished and close this part of the build out. Then it's onto the Officers quarters, radar shack and sonar room! More fabulous work on this amazing model Phil. If they ever do a re-make of the old 'Das Boot' series they'll be calling you up as a consultant for interior detail on the internal set for the U-boat!!
Love the stance of the Commandant and the way that he is hanging on to the periscope. Very relaxed and natural looking and well painted too.
Top work as usual Phil keep it coming, as I know you will.

So this week i wanted to complete the Control Room, however, there was still too much detail to add and so that will be next week. In the interim, i have been flitting all over the place, making up details for the outer hull section, which were taking longer than envisaged and so i came back to adding more crew. The inside of this hull section. The blue gas bottles are part-works supplied, with scratch-built ends. The original locations for these on the hull section were incorrect, so i filed these off and then repositioned the gas bottles as you see here. I then spent quite a bit of time ensuring this hull section would fit neatly into the Control Room, by filing off edges here and there. The next details i scratch-built to add to this hull section were the hydroplanes controls. The OMC [One Man Control] on modern submarines can be controlled by one person and operates the fore-planes, after-planes and rudder. The OMC, or helm, looks like a steering wheel type affair. On U-boats, the fore-planes were controlled separately to the after-planes while the rudder was controlled from the Aft Torpedo Compartment. Above the 4th gas bottle in the previous photo, on U995, there is a huge bank of valves and valve handwheels; i would say about 30 of them, all the way up the hull to the deck-head. I decided to model a small number of these to give an impression of the complexity. I didn't finish them as they took ages to get to this stage, see attached photo, but will continue with these during the weekend.
