arpurchase wrote: Hi Alan Nice job with the sanding there, just a little advice the flater and smoother you get the 1st planking will ease the application of the secondary planks, so getting this part right will improve the look of the final planking regards Andy Thanks Andy and your advice as always is so very welcome... I have taken a lot of time over the hull preparation and have managed to achieve a very smooth hull.... one I think will accept the secondary layer to a nice standard.... .. Have just given the hull a coat of sanding sealer and that has not highlighted any issues..... .. Once again, appreciate your comments.... Regards Alan

Yesterday evening I gave the hull a coat of sanding sealer, left overnight to dry. Also picked up issue 35 from the newsagents and spent some time studying the marking out process for the top of the hull and of course the gun ports.... Wanted to make sure all of my measurements were carried out following the curvature of the hull so to assist in the process I used a 5 x 0.5mm plank, this I found followed the curves nicely... Got all the heights marked out ready for cutting... Gandale attached the following image(s):

Having got both sides marked out to this stage I made a start on marking out the gun ports and have completed one side, the other side hopefully will be complete tomorrow.... Will ensure the bottom edge of the ports run parallel with the water line and not follow the curvature of the deck and will square each port off by the use of a 12 x 13mm jig, will carry this out on each port just prior to starting to cut them out... .. Won't be doing any cutting until Mr T publishes his diary for this issue, want to make sure I've got everything right before any cutting is done.... Hi Alan, looking good! I am a bit puzzled by your comments on the lower gunport heights - even though I am months away from that stage myself! If they were ON the waterline, would that not lead to one side or the other letting in water unless the ship was dead level in a calm sea? Then also, the guns would be mounted on the lower deck itself, so their heights above the waterline would follow any rise in the deck? If you set the gunports anywhere other than exactly between the lower and middle decks, you would have to create new lining boxes in the hull for the dummy guns to mount into? Maybe I am missing something

Maybe I am missing something Hi David and thanks for your comments... Am afraid you are missing something, I did say the lower edge of the gunports are to run parallel to the waterline, not on the waterline. The heights of the gunports will be above the waterline... Hope this clears up your query.... .. Thanks again... Regards Alan

Beautiful work there Alan. Seeing yours and others builds, makes me very impatient to start when I receive my first issues, time constraints tell me to finish the Vic first. great work alan! has a nice finish to it, the thing i've noticed with this is even if you mess up on the cutting you can cut away the wrong bamboo plank and replace it, or do the cutting off the hull and just fit it into place (if any of that makes sense) Processing - Progressing

Hi Alan Can i start by saying your build is looking excellent and the pictures are invaluable to those of us who are not as far on as yourself. I'm waiting for issue 34,35,36,37 Can i just ask when you cut down the stern stem to 2mm hangover. did you then sand a taper on full thickness of the plank. The extra support planks in the internal sounds a good idea and i will be stealing that one from you. Thanks and keep up the good work Cheers stu Cheers Stu

Looking good Alan. You may have noticed already but just check the gunport upper deck third from stern looks a little twisted on the photo. If you chock the hull level fore aft and side to side you can double check your bottom cills are horizontal using a short spirit level. When you come to sizing the ports I recommend sticking abrasive paper to some scrap wood.If you use say 10mm square strip and glue the abrasive paper you can rest the smooth side against one finished edge whilst sanding the adjacent edge, this helps a great deal in keeping the ports square.I used to use needle files but they soon loose their edge doing gunports unless you use permagrit ones. Kind Regards Nigel

Did most of my cutting and shaping of the planks off the hull, found it a lot easier and I could be a lot more accurate.... Regards Alan

Cheers stu Appreciate your nice comments Stujue, thank you... .. If my pictures are of any assistance to you or any other builders then that too pleases me, it is what this forum is all about, sharing exeriences, tips and knowledge to help us make the most of our builds.... .. As for your question, I did taper the full thickness of the stern planks after trimming to the overhang however, there is still more tapering to do which will be finished off when the final stern piece is put into place... hope this answers your question.... ... Finally you are welcome to use any of the methods I use, it is why i posted what I felt was a potential weakness..... Regards Alan
