Hi Graeme. Our friend Silent Running introduced me to that. It looks really interesting and shall be ordering a DVD next month when I have some more pennies to spend. You're an ace finding all this 'stuff', I really have no idea about searching the web and normally end up getting nowhere or getting thoroughly confused Thanks again and happy building David

Welcome Billbo, Hope you enjoy watching this build diary (when it gets started that is ). I'm hoping to make a start with my next delivery which should be in the next few days now. Good luck with your build and if you need any help, Riff-raff is building the U-96 as well as Pemberg and Silent Running. As for the conversion, it's entirely up to you which way you want to go with this, and if you feel that the kit has enough detail for you then that's fine, but it's something you'll want to seriously consider before you make a start on building the frames as a decision later in the build will make for extra work. Look forward to hearing how your U-96 is going. Happy building David

I'll be starting my build diary as well very soon and putting all the links for the research that I've done so far on it as well. Welcome to the U-96 club Billbo.

BUILD UPDATE #4
Hi shipmates, The 2nd delivery of parts arrived today so my build diary can now begin. Parts included in the delivery were Issues 4,5,6 and 7. After unpacking the parts, they were all carefully numbered in pencil according to the magazine build guide and then separated from the board ready for building to commence. I'll have make a trip to my local DIY today and buy a piece of timber long enough to accommodate the full length of the hull, so more to follow shortly. The images I took illustrate the first steps that were described above. Thanks for looking in Happy building Daviddaffy09 attached the following image(s):

Hi David - glad to see your up and running mate, the DVD looks interesting. We used the software to develop these kinds of DVDs to show hotel rooms when I worked in the multimedia design industry. Its called iPix and it really is a clever piece of kit. You do not need a parachute to skydive. You only need a parachute to skydive twice.

BUILD UPDATE #5
Hi everyone. Thanks riff-raff, Gandale and Pemberg for yesterday's input, much appreciated. Well today the build can start, but from the outset things do not go as per magazine build guide. As you know, I've opted for a forward torpedo room conversion to the standard kit, which in my humble opinion, will greatly enhance this build. So, the first steps are to do away with the 1st and 2nd frames from the standard kit. These are replaced by one frame which contains the cutaway for the enhancement. Also not required for the 'mod' are transverse frames/ribs (or whatever we call them) 6,7,8,9,10 11,and 12. In the build guide in Stage #1, we've started from step #9 onwards. In stage #2, steps #1 and #2 were omitted. I've also decided not to work on the PE at this stage, preferring to keep them in their original packaging until later in the build, so as to maintain their pristine condition. To finish this stage, I've taken the main frame from stage #3 of the build guide, attached it to the the previously completed torpedo room frame and left it to dry. HANDY TIPS FOR MODELLERS If the modellers amongst us don't have a 'set square' for lining up the transverse frames yet, a handy 'get around' can be used. I've taken the insert from transverse frame #19 and am using that as a squaring device for the frames.(see photo). Also, I found an off cut of 5mm dowel from my previous build of the 'Sultan Arab Dhow' which can be used as a centering tool for the reinforcement parts of the frame. It is an exact fit for those holes and lines them up perfectly. That's all for now. Thanks for looking in and keep the comments coming Happy building David

Hi david Looking good so far, I'm still waiting for my next delivery. I have just managed to clear enough space in my sons room (he's away at Uni) to lay this out so hopefully will get started this week. Don't forget that the ends of the forward horizontal slot just behind frame #5 need to be cut away as they will interfere with the fit of the inner torpedo tubes. Graeme

Thanks for reminding me of that Graeme, I had forgot to do that, however it wasn't too difficult a job ( a pair of side cutters and a needle file sorted it). Hope you get your parts soon so you can make a start as well. Happy building David

David Looks like your going to enjoy this one. From what I have seen of the ongoing stages on YouTube etc it looks like a well thought out kit with not too much to catch you out. Interesting to see that if you subscribe you get an essentials toolkit but strangely enough no model knife - the old health and safety and laws about selling "weapons" gone mad me thinks. Hope your build goes well. Happy Modelling

BUILD UPDATE #6
Hello again friends and thanks for the feedback. Today I pushed on with build, finishing Stage #3 and moving through Stages 4, 5, 6, and 7. Haven't met with any significant problems and have to say that my reservations about working with MDF were ill-founded, apart from wearing a mask when filing, I've found it a good medium to work with. All the parts are extremely accurately cut and give a really good tight fit. The only problem was with the extra conversion parts which were not laser-cut but CNC milled, which meant that the insides of the notches and cut-outs had very slightly rounded corners that had to be filed square with a small needle file before the transverse frames could be fitted so as to sit correctly. So that's about it for now, another 4 weeks until my next delivery during which time I'll be ordering a few more parts of the torpedo room conversion from Germany. Thanks for looking in and happy building David

It's looking good David I have worked with MDF or craftwood for years as a cabinet maker and yes it is very nice and easy to work with and strong as well, as long as you take the proper precautions and wear a good fitted breathing apparatus you should be fine. also remember to clean up with the apparatus on and shake all of your clothes off then take the apparatus of last. This is going to be a very special model when complete. Not sure the figures they are supplying look that great for 1:48 and not sure there is much else available. Should look brilliant when complete. Have you decided if you will weather or leave in a pristine paint finish? Happy Modelling

Hi Birdaj2, you've given me something to think about. Hadn't thought about crew figures, but I did see a You Tube video with a model u-boat complete with a crew but don't know what scale that was although it did seem to be close to the one we're building, so the jury's still out on that for the moment. Weathering is another issue that I had thought about and I've seen some beautiful models on this forum that have been made so much better by the addition of weathering. Having said that, I'm not an expert modeller and although there are some excellent tutorials around, I don't feel that my skills are up to such a task - I don't own an airbrush, which from looking at some of the said tutorials, seems an essential bit of kit for weathering. If I were to give it a try, I think I would buy a smaller and cheaper model to experiment on first because it would all have to be 'freehand', and I'm already committed to a customisation job on this build which I've never tackled before so this could be one gigantic research and experiment job. I must admit that weathering would look good on this build, but like the crew, I have a long while to think about your suggestions and I will give them more serious thought. Thanks and happy building David
