Just a couple of picture updates working on anchor davits and blocks, running boards etc, I was not happy with the deck furniture for the belaying pins i had done so am re-doing if your going to spend this much time whats the point of not getting it as good as you can - its my first wooden ship build and it sure is taking a long time but im happy with the results just another couple of years to go!

the best to you all

thanks Chris

these are a couple of pics showing one of the first ropes ive made using the ropewalk this is made from three single strands of the thread shown which is German (100% polyester outdoor thread and strong, not too expensive either) a European equivalent of Johncals BigGrin

I shall use this on the lanyards and experiment with others

using the ropewalk is not an exact science yet so any tips would still be appreciated

Cheers Ant

I got the Gutermann thread from my local sewing shop in Stroud , im sure there are many places you can get it Tony if you have a look on the web. Just make sure its the "outdoor thread" which is 100% polyester, as they do many other ordinary threads that are not as strong.

Now finally got to grips with the ropewalk and am producing decent rope every time
thanks to Johncals help - ive stuck a dowel in each end ot the ropewalk to take a drill chuck for the time being - seems to work fine on the 3 thread ropes but will probably fall to bits on the bigger stuff so will have to do some modifications i reckon.

Once again Johncal thanks for your help on this one, it does look so much better and is much quicker using the drill!

Have been working on the curved section that holds the ships bell - havent a clue of the name for this area of the ship.

Also testing a rope rigging which is temporary to hold each mast in place when they finally get the glue on them! this seems to keep them perfectly in the upright from both bow to stern and port to starboard.

Ive got some really nice mahogany 5mm deadeyes which im very tempted to change on the ship , i just dont like the painted black ones they look scruffy Im not worried about historical regularities just think it would look better, going to use a pre-blackened brass wire around these for the hooks to the chainplates what do you think ?

getting the cannons built and ready for the upper deck now ships moving forward again

cheers all AntBigGrin BigGrin

Hi all

I havent been on the forum for a while unfortunatlely i was diagnosed with cancer a few months ago which is now terminal.

Thats enough of that though

Ive been getting on with my version of the HMS Surprise which has no historical resemblance of her probably but never the less shes moving on, not in any sort of order really, but now finally the top cannon and rigging. I am trying to finish her for a very dear friend we shall see but not going to rush just get where i get.

Im not sure how these photos are going to be so if there's problems i'll try and change things

My best to all of you and i shall try to keep things updated.
