Nice work Dave, I know what you mean about spraying white paint, for some reason it takes me numerous coats too. Pre-shade is perfect too :-) Steve

Thanks for all the comments.
I've seen a lot of pre shading where it looks way over done and like a zebra. I did debate about leaving the pre shading and using washes instead but overal I'm pleased with how it came out.

Thank Mick This update is all about the masking and more masking to get the different colours down. Still more masking to come for the engine area, also the wheel wells need to be done in white, they probably would have been easier to do before I stuck all the undercarriage doors on This would look more exciting in the camouflage colours but the 92 Sqn Phantoms were 3 different shades of grey when they were acting in the Air Defense role in RAF Wildenrath. davetwin attached the following image(s):

Thanks Al, I certainly dont remember having to mask up as much when building a ship or tank So more masking and spraying done, I've also masked and sprayed inside the wheel wells now too but didnt take any pictures of that yet. Its slowly but surely getting there and not far off from putting down a first layer of varnish and getting some washes on her. davetwin attached the following image(s):

I appear to have missed your last update Dave, but never mind, caught up with the diary now. Excellent work on the painting and good use of different metallic shades too. Those exhaust cans look good I must say.
Well done Dave, looking forward to seeing more of this!!

Thanks Ian & Phil for your comments I've painted the wheel wells white and the hydraulic arms that are part of the landing gear metallic steel. Ive also now applied the gloss coat ready to apply a panel line wash and crack on with the numerous decals that need to be applied. My gloss of choice is Alclad 2 Aqua Gloss as it dries hard as nails davetwin attached the following image(s):

Nice work Dave and she's looking good!!
Hope I'm not trying to "teach granny to suck eggs" here Dave (apologies if I am), but I note that you say you have gloss coated it with the intention of adding a panel wash and then the decals, which is fine but by doing the wash before the decals you will find that your highlighted panel lines will be hidden beneath the decals, so you may have to go over the top of the markings with a little wash afterwards to complete the effect?
The commonly accepted method is to gloss coat your paintwork, which you have done, then apply the decals, then gloss coat again to seal the decals, then do your panel wash, let it almost dry before removing the excess and then seal the whole lot with your final clear coat of choice to finish? That way your panel lines will show across the top of the markings and not be hidden beneath them?
If you are using acrylic paint and clear coats which I believe you are, then use an oil based wash, but only if you have sealed the decals first with acrylic clear coat. You can then just use an oil thinner dampened cotton bud to remove the excess and it won't affect the acrylics beneath. If you don't seal the decals beneath an acrylic clear coat and then try removing the oil wash with relevant thinners it could adversely affect the colours on the decals?
Hope that helps Dave?
