Graeme, Test try a water based varnish rather than a petroleum based one. Water based products do not tend to amber. Over here MinWax has sprays in gloss, satin and flat. I am sure you can find something similar. Worth a try! Tom

This is a lovely looking build so far Graeme, the paint work looks great. I recall Wilko did a water based varnish if that's the route you want to take

I would go Danish oil on the decks and a water based varnish everywhere else Current builds:-C57,Zero, Lamborghini Countach, Caldercraft HMS Agamemnon,Robi,R2-D2, MFH Cobra .

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I have just received some Vallejo high gloss varnish so I will spray the hull this weekend.
Andy, I have Danish oil but for some reason never thought of using it on the deck and unfortunately I have already given the deck a coat of matt varnish before it was masked off.

Hi Graeme, You might want to double check whether the Vallejo varnish requires thinning. A couple of thin coats is preferable than one thicker coat. You might already know this so pardon me if i'm teaching you to suck eggs. Regards, Phil W. Cheers Phil, yes it will need thinning. I used Vallejo paints on the interior of my U-96 torpedo room.

Hi, the next job was to mark the positions of the cabins/companion ways onto the masked deck. The centre line was marked and the forward position of each cabin marked. The cabins were then placed in position and a line drawn round them, Pic 1. I then cut 1mm inside the lines using a new scalpel blade and removed the inner masking tape, Pic 2. The exposed decking was then sprayed brown, Pic 3, and the rest of the masking tape removed from the deck, Pic 4. The deck edging pieces were then painted, Pic 5, and when dry glued in place. To allow the clamps to hold the centre of the strips down I used off cuts of planking against the bulwarks to push the clamps out, Pic 6. The next job was to cut 38 bulwark supports and stain them walnut. The cut pieces were held onto an mdf strip with upside down masking tape, Pic 7, and stained accordingly, Pic 8. That’s it for now Graeme pemberg attached the following image(s):

Cheers Chris, thanks for looking in. The next job is to fit the stern rails and fittings and the bulwark supports. The stern rails and fittings, Pics 1 & 2, were sanded to fit the shape of the stern and then painted brown. The stern bulwark supports are spaced 22mm apart, 11mm each side of the centre line so a piece of card 22mm wide was cut and taped across the centre line. The supports were then glued in place, Pic 3. The side rails were then glued in place, Pic 4. The aft most side supports were slid through the side rails and glued into place., Pic 5. The next supports to be fitted were at the scuppers and the good old lego brick ensured they were square, Pics 6 & 7. The rest of the supports were then fitted using the spacer provided to make sure the spacing was even, Pics 8 & 9. Once dry the supports were cut level with the bulwarks. The bulwark capping rails were then removed from the fret, Pic 10, and stained walnut. I’m afraid I forgot to include the bow piece in Pic 10. The rails were then glued in place, Pic 11. Next was to prepare the rudder and tiller. Pic 12 shows the parts as removed from the fret. The edges were then sanded round and a groove filed into the end of the tiller, Pic 13. Pic 14 shows the parts after sanding. The brass clamping piece, Pic 15, was removed from the fret and bent around the rudder, pic 16 & 17. The tiller arm was stained walnut and the rudder painted to match the hull. The brass clamp was fixed to the tiller and Pic. 18 shows the finished tiller and rudder although the arm is not fixed to the rudder yet to enable the rudder to be fitted to the hull. That’s it for now Graeme pemberg attached the following image(s):
