The paintwork looks great, as do the portholes, nice one.

Excellent work Jase, looks great with some paint on and nice result on the glazed portholes. All of that etch must have driven you nuts but very worthwhile in the end?
Very well done.

Thank you all for looking in and the kind words. I am very happy with the paint finish. I know it looks like a lot of etch but the hull has hardly put a dent in it, loads more to ad yet
Thanks All

Laying the deckthe main deck has 3 wood veneer sections to overlay the deck. with all the deck fittings painted the deck could be added.
I placed the centre section down first. I was a little surprised that some of the holes in the deck were not perfectly correct despite a fit to bock edges correctly. some very fine slivers of deck had to be removed with a sharp blade to get the deck to lay totally flat. (see post 38 in Scuttlebutt for more info on fitting wood decks)
Both the bow and stern decks were a much better fit although some trimming will be required when the hawsers are fitted.
There are two etch bolster plates that cover the flat plastic moulded into the deck. these were primed and painted before fixing with medium CA. Stern Skylight
Sorry this is slightly out of order as this was done before the wood decks were laid.
There are two skylights on the stern deck. These are actually brass on the real ship.
I painted the glass sections first using Tamiya semi gloss just because its the thickest black paint I have so easier to apply to the recesses of the moulding. Once dry they were given a gloss coat to look like glass.
I used AK real metal brass for picking out the skylight frame.

Stern Gallery part 1.
The kit is supplied with an etch stern gallery made up of a deck and railings in two parts. the MK 1 set is just the same but offers some better detail.
the deck of the gallery is actually dark wood and not as I first assumed iron.
I have used WEM Mahogany sadly unavailable any more.

Hull Construction part 10. Screws and Bow Crest.
The Bow crest is the rising sun and is painted Gold. The kit part is actually three parts to allow it to form around the bow leading edge. I have painted it a pail gold as I want to give it a wash with will darken it a little at some point.
the screws were painted AK brass. the true metal paint can be polished to give a more realistic metal finish. there not as good as accrual brass but I think they look ok
the finishing touch to lower hull is to ad the depth markings which are part of the kit decals.

Deck Fittings part 1, large winches
The plastic winches supplied in the kit are not particularly good looking
The MK1 set brings together 4 etch parts and a very nice resin part to create something that looks as it should.
the etch box was a little difficult to keep to shape so I chose to solder it on the internal joints.
once built up the rope was painted with AK deck tan and then given a wash of Humbrol brown.

Looking good Jase. Just how hard is it to solder your etch? Any problems with warpage?

No issues with warping if you do it right, you can solder very fine detail, I have just solders the funnel cap cages. I am working on 4 etch tutorials one being soldering they will be in Scuttlebutt soon Jase “Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to pause and reflect.” -Mark Twain

Jase Hi Jase, There was an excellent topic on soldering techniques produced in the know how section of the forum. May save you a lot of work. https://forum.model-spac...aspx?g=posts&t=7764

You're really cracking on with this build Jase, but as you said she is really starting to take shape. You must have the patience of a saint with all the etch, but agreed it does enhance the kit somewhat. Can't believe you've barely scratched the surface of it though! Keep the updates coming. She's gunna be a stunner Regards Gray
