1461 The armies of two kings, Henry VI and Edward IV, engage at Towton during the 100 years war (dubbed the war of the roses by William Shakespeare). Although the civil war would continue for a further 3 years the battle at Towton is that the victory assured Edward's crown and ruined his enemies' cause. The battle also established the young king's reputation as a brilliant commander. In the long run, however, York's triumph would only be temporary.
