Hi Peter, this is reportedly to be one of the best plank on frame kits of the Titanic on the market and she is full of detail... Overall length is 1350mm and 140mm wide... Not sure on the height... .. I've been having a good read through your build diary and must credit you on a first class build... Hope you don't mind but I will be referring to your build as I progress on this one..... Thanks for looking in.... Regards Alan

Starting now to get into the build proper and throughout this build I will be using various reference material in my research, these include a number of well known websites, other modellers builds and of course A Modelmaker's Manual by Peter Davies-Garner. Instruction now tell me to start working on the forward Well deck but decided first thing to do was to carry out the research on this area.. Immediate thing that popped out had to do with the stern wall on this deck... The kit does not have any windows/portholes on this wall but rather shows two doors port and starboard... No where can I find in any of the material I looked at the existence of any doors on this wall so first modification got under way... Peter's book shows a lot of detail on this wall but his diagrams are at a scale of 1/384, so some obvious conversion calculations had to be done in order to ensure the windows were in the right place and of course the right size and dimensions, these will need to be drilled out especially as I'm lighting this kit... There is also two light fitting to be fitted too.... The holes need to be drilled at 2.4mm dia and the outer holes which incidentally have to be drilled through the rib are 1.9mm... Tonight was simply calculations and marking out which did take some time.... Will outline other mods on this deck as I go along.... Happy building all... Hi Alan! What´s that- you are starting a new ship and I missed it! It´s very nice, I like it!!!!!! regards, Bernd

Thanks for the really nice comments Ian and I am pleased you will be following this build.... Would wholeheartedly recommend this kit even though there are lots of modifications and additions to be made, especially if you want a build that is historically accurate, or as accurate as it can be.... The other good thing is the kit is available in affordable sections where it is not necessary to purchase all the sections at once... Have been assured by CMB that this being one of Mantua's flag ship kits then there is no chance kits not being available when they are required.... Hope you can get it one day and feel sure you will do a fabulous job of her just as you have done on your other build.... Best of luck with it..... Thanks again,,,, Regards Alan

Regards Alan Thanks Alan, I was never happy with the finish i got on the hull, the titanic was my first build and i have been learning ever since so now know how to get it looking better than it does. The other bit i didn't really like on the amati kit was the card fascia's that act as the wall linings, there were PE kits for it but i didn't know about this at the time. If i was doing it again that would be my way forward. Good luck with it all and i will be following as i have an enthusiasm for anything titanic Cheers Peter

Have been looking online to see if there is any etch available for her in this scale but so far haven't found anything.... Would dearly love to replace the railings with etch so will have to keep looking..... Thanks again Regards Alan

Have once again changed the build sequence a little... Instructions say to fit the forward well deck bulkheads and then plank the deck.... Decided to start planking the deck first before fitting the bulkheads, this gives me easier access... Planks are very thin at only 2mm wide and also decided to run a pencil lightly along one edge of the planking strip to give the planks a little more definition... More research revealed the deck planking was also edged along the bulkheads so thought I would try to recreate this on my build.... fiddly but think the results will be worth it... Hopefully get some more done tomorrow..... Regards Alan Gandale attached the following image(s):

Brilliant work Alan, love it - I was thinking the decking would be in large sections like on the big plastic kits, never thought you would be doing individual planks at this scale. I bet it will be worth the effort though Steve

I bet it will be worth the effort though Steve Thanks Stevie, appreciate your kind words and support.... .. She's a big girl at this scale and with deck planking at only 2mm wide, plus the fact there is a lot of deck to plank means this is going to be a lengthy process but you are right, I'm sure the effort will be well worth it... or at least I hope so..... ... Thanks again.... Regards Alan

Deck planking now complete on the forward well deck... When all the planks were laid and the deck surrounds done I gave the whole piece a rub down with very fine wet and dry.(dry of course).... Have now given it it's first coat of natural Danish Oil and am very pleased with the results.... going to give it another coat tomorrow just to darken it a little more...... then onto the front and rear bulkheads..... .. Happy building all.... Regards Alan Gandale attached the following image(s):
