Good morning from 'The Dockyard'. During the next 2 to 3 weeks my U230 build log will be focusing on fitting part-works supplied PE, scratch building a few components and carrying out some running repairs. At the end of my last update I had fitted the part-works supplied PE brass strips to the bow section. Carrying on from this I decided to pin these brass strips to guarantee that they would not start to break away in the future. I pinned them using 1.0mm diameter aluminium tube. The attached photo shows the first hole being drilled out with a 1.0mm diameter drill held in a pin vice. I cut the aluminium tube into small lengths and test fitted each one before fitting. Each pin had a tiny blob of cyanoacrylate applied for extra adhesion. The attached photo shows the pin in place. I continued in this manner until all of the brass strips, port and starboard were completed. Working my way aft along the boat, the next job was to tidy up some filler on one of the compartments saddle tank profiles. The attached photo shows the profile being dressed with a needle file. Moving along, I applied a small bead of glue around the pipework situated in No.3 MBT [Main Ballast Tank] to strengthen them. Moving swiftly along I then had to dress the flood holes on the hull with a needle file as some of them were slightly out of shape. The attached photo shows the starboard side holes being attended too. I filed the port side in the same fashion. Next up was fitting the part-works supplied PE rivet plates for the upper hull. This photo shows them attached to the fret. Quite a while ago I had made various drains and also three discharge ports located on the hull. I initially used M2 washers, fixed to each to act as a flange. Due to handling these washers had come off, so it was time to address this and come up with a different method of fixing. My plan was to glue the washers to 0.25mm thick plastic sheet enabling the washers to better adhere to the hull. While I was filing the plastic to match the washer, the two separated and by accident I was left with a perfect M2 size plastic washer. Happy days! I continued in this fashion until I had three. This attached photo shows the first discharge port location. This photo shows how I drilled through the plastic with a 2.0mm dia drill and then slid the metal washer down over the drill shank so that both holes would align. As I mentioned before, when I had gotten to this stage and began to file the plastic to suit the metal washer, they both separated leaving me with a pretty good plastic M2 washer, which would be even easier to bend and fix to the hull. The attached photo shows the metal washer on the left and it's plastic counterpart on the right.
