Thanks for all the kind comments guys, much appreciated. Just a short update. Pic 1 shows a rudder hinge as received (out of focus I’m afraid). The hinges were cut down to two 2 hole lower hinge halves and two 1 hole upper hinge halves, Pic 2. Hinge pins were glued to one half of each hinge, Pic 3. and these halves were then fitted to the rudder, Pic 4. The rudder was then fitted to the hull and the tiller arm fitted to it. Cheers Walter, thanks for looking in. First in this update is the fitting of the chainwales, There are 4 small chainwales and these were removed from the fret, sanded smooth and stained walnut, Pic 1. The outer edges were then covered in veneer in a similar way as the cabin roof edges. The aft chainwales are fitted immediately aft of the scuppers and the forward ones 72mm forward of the scuppers. The position of the forward ones were measured and marked with masking tape as shown in Pic 2. Each chainwale had its inside edge sanded to conform the shape of the hull and was glued in place using thick super glue, Pic 3. Next the bowsprit pin rail and the anchors were assembled. The 3 parts of the pin rail were sanded smooth and the tops of the uprights shaped to a rounded point, Pic 4. These parts were then stained walnut and glued together. The anchor castings were filed to remove any mold lines and a brass wire brush on a rotary tool was used to remove any oxidation. They were then cleaned with alcohol prior to painting, Pic 5. The anchors were assembled and the anchor rings fitted. Pic 6 shows the completed pin rail and anchors. The next job was to prepare the barrels and pails. These were masked using Tamiya masking tape, pic 7, and the hoops painted black. On removing the tape there was a little bit of bleed but on the whole the finish was pretty good, better than I could of achieved freehand. The stands for the barrels were stained walnut. Pic 8 shows the stained stands and painted barrels. The barrel plugs were fashioned from the ends of a stained toothpick. The pails were painted in the same way as the barrels and handles formed from rigging thread. Pic 9 shows the completed barrels and pails. The hand pump was assembled next, the metal castings being prepped in the same way as the anchors and then painted black. The pivot was again made from a stained toothpick, Pic 10, with Pic 11 showing the assembled pump. Finally I prepared and fitted the hawser ports. These were provided in the form of black eyelets which had to be shortened to fit the through the previously drilled holes without protruding through the bulwarks. These were then painted gold using Tamiya spray paint. Pic 12 shows the painted eyelets and Pic 13 shows them glued in place. Well that’s it for now Graeme pemberg attached the following image(s):

Graeme Looking really nice and its coming together so quickly now. Really impressed with the wood stain you are using. Is this how you finished the rudder? Hope you do not mind me asking but what brand are you using? I can see a tin in your pictures but do not recognise the brand. Happy Modelling

Thanks for the comments guys. Tony, the walnut wood stain I used was Ronseal quick drying wood stain but the clear varnish I used on the rudder was Vallejo clear gloss varnish. This was thinned and sorayed on the hull but the rudder was done by brush straight from the bottle.

Cheers Jase. It was now time to start on the deck fitting (cleats, eyebolts etc.). The cleats were removed from the fret and the edges sanded to shape. Pic 1 shows as removed from fret on the left and after sanding on the right. I drilled the bottom of each cleat and a piece of brass wire was glued into it (a planking pin with its head removed could also be used). This was done to both facilitate holding the cleats whilst painting and to provided more secure fixing to the deck etc.. The same was done to the 4 tie down posts, Pic 2. All the parts were then held in clamps and the cleats painted and the posts stained as per the instructions, Pic 3. Rings were then added to eyebolts and Pic 4 shows all the finished parts. Location holes were then drilled in the various locations around the deck and the various pieces were glued in place, Pic 5. The next job was to start on the bowsprit. This was made from a piece of dowel and the instructions explain how to taper the dowel by hand to make the correct shape. As I have a very modest lathe (hoping to upgrade shortly) I actually used it the taper the bowsprit, Pic 6. Once the correct taper was formed the tip was removed and the bowsprit cut to length. The pin rail, made last time, was then fitted to the deck. The end of each post was drilled and a short length of brass rod was cut to just protrude from the post end (again a pin cut to the correct length could be used). This was then filed to a point, Pic 7. The correct position for the pin rail was measured from the 1:1 drawing and this was transferred to the deck. The pin rail was then pushed down onto the deck so the pins would mark the planks. The two positions were then drilled to take the rods, Pic.8. The sharpened rods were then removed from the rail, replaced with slightly longer ones, Pic 9, and the pin rail glued in place. The bowsprit stained and once dry was pushed into position so it sat under the centre of the pin rail and a hole drilled down through the centre of the rail and into the dowel and a pin glued in place to secure the bowsprit. A cleat was added to the top of the bowsprit half way between the pin rail and prow. An eyebolt was fixed to the stem at the level of the waterline and a length of chain fixed to it. Pic 10 shows the bow at this point in the construction. That’s it for now Graeme pemberg attached the following image(s):

Graeme Graeme Thanks for the update on the wood stain. That is certainly one i will keep in mind. Just looking at your latest updates and must say you are very skilled using your lathe to get your mast lengths done to size. Looks like a useful piece of kit. Happy Modelling
