Lower superstructure part 1With the first set of winches done my next task was the lower superstructure amidships.
first up is a smal structure to which a single door and some hatches are added from the upgrade set. Photo 1. The etch doors are made u of 3 sections which are folded to create an outer and inter surface as well as a door frame. this allows toy to model any door open if your wish. Photo 2 &3.
The second small structure has the kit supplied boat support replaced by etch. Photo 4 & 5
The next structure will accommodate one of the funnels. there are etch doors to add as well as a hatch
The last structure is more complex in terms of the etch. this part has some kit supplied etch, some mesh that sits in the top. the upgrade etch has folds to the side which lift the grill making it much more realistic. 6 hatches are also added, these fold in the same ways as the doors. finally two replacement etch boat supports are added.
All the parts were primed with Halfords grey before bing painted with light grey. Although the artwork depicts the ship with white upper works this is not correct. it was a pail grey, IJN greys all appeared to dark so after trying several I settled on this grey.
Once dried the parts were secured in place with CA.jase attached the following image(s): “Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to pause and reflect.” -Mark Twain

Deck fittings part 1
I started the deck fittings at the bow. there are a number of parts to be fitted that need no alteration, but most the hatches have some form of etch part to be added.
The kit comes with anchor grills the ones in the MK1 set look much better however.
Most the hatches can be displayed open. some kit parts are totally replaced by etch.
I decided to display one hatch open so added a little wire to depict it proper open
the 6 etch parts that are attached to a hub are kit parts, not sure what it is though?
the wood deck needed a little trimming to take some part correctly
there are some very small etch discs that go on the deck. both the kit and the MK1 set supply these the MK1 set had a little more definition so I used them

Air vents Part 1
one of the loverly features of this kit is the large number of air vents. By 1905 most of the upper cowls had been removed and this kit comes with the etch to work the later vents, as does the MK1 set. however as launched in 1902 all the vents had cowls Both the Kit and the MK1 set have cowl grills. My research has not been able to identify which is most accurate, however I decided I prefer the look of the kit grills which sit inside the towel rather than the MK1 which cover the whole from as this would be visible.
some considerable care is needed to check the orientation of the cowls the instructions are good but once they are built and painted it is very easy to mix them up
there is some cleanup and filling required at the base of a small number of the vents but otherwise fit is really nice.

TY jase; I joined this forum because of your Mikasa build; I always wanted to build this Battleship but felt it was a bit out of my depth; you my friend are turning that all around and I have now have the model and the Pontos detail up set; and I am following your build as a guide;I am retired and haven't built anything in 30 odd years; but this year have started Modelling again; built a few tanks and they turned out OK; so the next move is into a 1/200 scale ship; and here we are today; I love your work and I love the way you set it out for the build; BTW the only reason I chose the Pontos kit is that it provides a set of jigs for the holes for the etch ladders; I thought it would make life easier for my failing eyes (I'm 66 this year)anyway Jase love your work;am enjoying your build very much; and am looking forward to starting mine soon; later mate

Excellent work as always Jase, I'm not a ship modeller especially period ships, as I keep saying but I do enjoy watching some of the more modern metal hulled warship builds on here and yours is one of the more fascinating for me.
Keep up the good work mate and well done again.

Once again jase TY for your support; and yes the kit is a beauty although the pontos set is a bit gobsmacking! have found a workaround for my sight problems have purchased a magnifying glasses set with 4 different lenses so that works for me!; also my partner got me a work bench light with a magnifying lense; so its all good: As for the build; 1902 as built but before 1905; I want that Predreadnought feel and you get that with the Black Hull and light upper works; after Her first refit she lost all that and she became just another grey Warship; as for sharing..........as of now don't know how to upload stuff- but learning; nuff said;TY for your great build and I look forward me the next bit. Hal
