Getting close to the end now

I would like to start this post by saying a big thanks to my friend Warthog for his help with the bonnet and some of the brightwork. After several attempts I was not happy with the finish I was achieving. Warthog kindly offered to help out as he has a lot of experience of that sort of finish where as i have next to none - Big ThanksCool

Ok so the hud assembly has now been fitted to the main body and the completed grill fitted. The complete body assembly has now been fixed to the chassis. Dry fitting flagged a problem with the exhaust fit which was preventing the body to sit flat so I am going to have to cut the exhaust at the silencer joint and assemble in two parts to correct the fit and have everything sat as it should.

With the body fixed in place I can now start the final fit out. Starting at the rear the fuel filler, License plate and tail lamp bodies have been fitted.

The brass steps have been fitted

At the front the headlight bracket and headlamp bodies have been fitted.

The steering column and wheel have been assembled ready for the wood rim to be painted in.

More very soon.

Just for you Steve

Warthog's process.

Products used:

Halfords white primer as a base.
Halfords Matt black
Halfords Clear Lacquer
Carplan T-Cut
Alclad2 Chrome ALC-107
Alclad2 mirrored gold ALC-122
Johnson's Klear

Process:

1. Soak parts in bleach to remove original chrome plating
2. Clean up edges and remove any flash from parts
3. Fit parts together and allow 24hrs to dry
4. Clean-up all surfaces using 3000 micro mesh
5. First coat of primer white to show up and defects
6. Go over all surfaces with 3000 micro mesh again to flatten
7. First coat of Matte Black
8. Go over surfaces again with 3000 micro mesh to flatten
9. First coat of Clear Lacquer and left for 3-4 hours to dry
10. Go over surfaces with 3000 micro mesh to flatten
11. Second coat of Clear Lacquer and let dry for 3-4 hours
12. Final coat of Clear Lacquer left for 24 hours to dry.
13. Micro mesh 8000 to polish out and T-Cut all surfaces
14. Wash under warm water to remove any excess T-Cut from recesses and allow to dry overnight.
15. First dusting over of Alclad2 Chrome set at 20psi and allow 1hr to dry.
16. Second dusting over of Alclad2 Chrome and allowed to dry for a few hours.
17. Final coat of Alclad2 Chrome and left for 24 hours to dry.

18. I Submerged the whole bonnet into a full glass of Pledge Klear to cover the whole of the surface area then allowing the bonnet to naturally dry using a lint free tissue to soak up any excess Klear from the edges being careful not to touch the surfaces.

This was repeated 3 times allowing the Klear to dry between each dunking to achieve a thorough coating.

Once completely dry, using a lint free cloth the bonnet was polished to achieve the "shine".

Using a "Micro Mesh" panel line scribing tool, I followed the recessed panel edges taking off a very fine layer of the chrome so that you have the black underneath to simulate that they are separate panels where the hinges are..

The pin stripes are the same product as was used on the fenders.

Thanks Jase, lot of work but it deffinatly shows in the quality of the finish you have achieved.
I have a Jag XKE kit that has loads of horrible chrome on it so this is why I was asking.
Cheers for the detailed reply anyway, bookmarked for future referenceBigGrin

Nice work Jase. Only thing I would say is to dull down the tyres to look like rubber.

Another update.

The rear lights are ship lanterns, thus one is red and one is green. The centres were painted chrome silver and then I used Tamiya clear red and green. Finally i used Micro Kristal Klear to make lenses

Gear lever and handbrake are now installed, as is the spare wheel.

The engin crank handel is now fitted. The headlamps had the inner linings painted in Tamiya chrome silver and the lenses were fixed in place using canopy glue. The windscreen assembly has been installed, again I used Kristal Klear to make lenses for the little lamps. The rear view mirror was covered in bare metal chrome foil to give a mirror effect.

The steering column completes the cabin build but final washes still need to be done after construction is completed.

Thanks all for the comments. Your right Steve, I don't understand why this kit has not been re-run.

The side wing propeller assembles are now completed as are the front and rear wings. and the rear propeller, I think these were the only parts that actually fitted well!!. The exhaust is now in place, that was a reel pig to fit.

So that is construction done. I still have to pick out some of the detail in a number of places seats, doors, propellers etc; once this is done I will post the final photos in the finished build gallery.

Thats my fourth build diary completed, I want to thank you all for following the build and all the kind words of support I hope you think i have done justice to a classic rare kit and to an iconic car. Again big thanks to warthog for his help. I have a glass case for this on my landing and will sit on a shelf above my zero.Cool BigGrin
