ian smith wrote:Hi Alan. Looking superp. Look forward to seeing your progress. Have you made any progress into lighting kits yet. She will look stunning lit up. ian Thanks for you continued support Ian and for the very nice comments.... No progress on the lighting yet except that a plan has now been formulated in my head... There is a ton of work to be done on the Bow, well and stern decks before I get anywhere close to starting to wire her up for the lighting and even then I believe there are over 1000 portholes that will need to be drilled out to allow light to pass through.... Rest assured, will be keeping a detailed diary on how it all comes together and that includes the lighting... Thanks again Regards Alan

Just now I am busy planking the aft well deck which is also proving to be tricky with the surrounds and of course slow with planks only being 2mm wide.... Hope to post more pics of progress soon.... Regards Alan

Finished planking the aft well deck and this I have to say with the size of the planks was a very time consuming process.. once again edged the deck with 2mm edging... And again, used a pencil lightly down one edge of the planks to give a little more definition.... .. Sanded the deck with fine grade sandpaper and have given it the first coat of natural Danish oil.... Started the cladding on the bow well deck, cut the pieces to fit, gave them a coat of primer followed by a few coats of titanium white.... Also cut 4 of the etched doors off the fret and stuck them down onto masking tape before giving them a coat of metal primer...... .. More soon..... The decks look fantastic Alan, i was just looking at this at cmb and it's a great way to build, buying in smaller kits as and when you need them. Steve

Steve Thank you for the very positive comment Stevie, very much appreciated.... .. You are so right, buying in the smaller kits when needed does make it easier to afford. It is how I came about getting this as members of my family obviously got together and between themselves bought various kits for me for my xmas.... Would say though, it is a kit full of detail and just following the build as is will give a beautiful model but there are lots of additional work that needs to be done should you wish to have something a little closer to being historically accurate..... .. It is reportedly to be one of the best Titanic kits on the market so would I recommend it to others..... you bet I would.... . Looking at your Vic build this is one that would give you an immense amount of enjoyment putting it together..... Best regards Alan

Hello Alan, sound like you have the same problem as I do with my mantua sternwheeler. Very rudimentary instructions. I am looking forward to seeing it completed. Superb work so far. Regards, Tony.

Regards, Tony. Thanks Tony, thanks for the very positive comment and for taking the time to look in.... Have to agree with you, the instructions are very basic to say the least with little in the way of descriptions... Simply says 'glue', 'sand'. etc with a couple of pics along the way.... .. This build is going to take time especially with what I have in mind and of course I have to work on my primary build.. the SOTS....Plenty in front of me yet... Thanks again,, Regards Alan

Regards Trev Thank you for those very positive comment Trev, appreciate it.... .. Never thought of Marquetry but to be honest I think I will stick to working with wood on model ships, it gives me so much pleasure it would be hard to beat.... .. Thanks again... Regards Alan

Little progress but very very slow going.... been working on the rear bulkhead of the bow well deck.... After painting was fully dried, glued the maple strip on the bulkhead and got down to measuring where the windows would be... Stuck a strip of masking tape onto the bulkhead and marked out where the window would go... drilled the windows out using a 2.1mm drill bit and cleaned out the holes... .. As I intend to light this kit I used Krystal Clear to give the appearance of glass.... When all done, glued the bulkhead to the aft deck ensuring all was square... .. Two smaller windows to drill yet at each end but can't do them until the well deck is fitted as I have to drill into the ribs... None of the detail being shown is in the instructions it is all additional modification.... Now working on the bow bulkhead which again is going to take some time.... Happy building all.... Moved forward a little and have now done as much as I can at this stage on the bow well deck... Sanded the tops of the bow ribs during the process of dry fitting the well deck and the bow deck as per the instructions. This is all dry fitted as yet and its my intention not to fit any decks fully until I have sorted out wiring runs etc.... .. There are still two light fitting to be added to the rear bulkhead, will be using fibre optics for this but still have to come up with a way fitting light shades rather than just leaving the end of a simple fibre optic bare.... thinking cap is on.... .. Now going to start fitting the bulkheads on the aft well deck.... Happy building all.. Regards Alan Gandale attached the following image(s):
