UPDATE #18
Welcome back, this update is a little later than planned because I needed to tidy up my workspace, so with a nice clean area I could get back to work on the dhow. The deck spaces have now been completed together with all the furniture, barrels, buckets etc; and I've also been working on the forward deck, making up the davits, anchor and bowsprit. Also completed are the curved reinforcements on the stern awning supports. All the barrels and buckets were stained Rustic Oak and the bands painted with Black metal from my Victory paint set. The three sets of barrels on the deck were glued to the 'skids' and set aside to dry before lashing them down - a tricky little job for which I found a needle threader very useful. The coils of rope were made up by wrapping the thread around a piece of dowel several times, given a coat of dilute PVA and left to dry before carefully sliding them off the dowel. When making up the bowsprit, I had to work on modifying the prow slightly to accommodate it. Because of making an error at the planking stage, I had to build up the prow with an extra row of planks, so to make the bowsprit 'lay' correctly, I used a round file to carve out a recess in the said planks which can be seen in one of the photos. All the parts were given a couple of coats of clear gloss varnish before finally being fitted to the relevant places on the deck area. The building the Arab dhow is now well over half completed, and the next thing to turn my attention to is making the masts which will be in the next update. Until then, thanks for looking in, as ever comments welcome and happy building. Daviddaffy09 attached the following image(s):

Hi Martyn, Jase, Karl, Mr.T, and Steve Thank you for the kind words. A medal wow!! I really didn't expect that, what a fantastic surprise. I feel very humbled to receive that . Don't quite know what I've done to deserve that - the build isn't even finished yet, but it's very inspiring and a great encouragement for me, and I hope that I'm giving inspiration and encouragement back to all the members of the forum who have been supportive of my efforts and want to have a go at this one as well (if they haven't already done so). I'd particularly like to thank Jase in whose footsteps I have been following. It was his build diary that gave me the encouragement to build this model, and I have had it running in a separate tab next to the forum so I could refer to it any time I was in a spot. So, thank you Jase. Happy building David

Hi Andy, Mark , Alan, Thanks, it was quite a surprise to get that. I was just enjoying this little build so it was a nice unexpected bonus for me. Just started work on the masts and rigging today so I can see the chequered flag on the horizon now. Have to start thinking of a home for it . Happy building David

UPDATE #19
Welcome back and a really big thank you for the congratulations messages and the positive comments. Today is just quick update because I've been rather over-zealous with the use of the thread for the rigging and have consequently run out so I've had to order some more from CMB. Therefore it will be a few days waiting before I get back to completing - yes!, I did say 'completing' the build . All that is left now is the main mast and main lateen sail and rigging so we really are nearing the end now. I was merrily working on the mizzen mast and awning when SWMBO made the observation "Aren't you going to varnish the bottom of the boat then?" Well, in my enthusiasm to get on with the rigging, I'd completely forgotten about varnishing the hull , and with one mast already in place, I thought this might be a tricky job. When voicing my problem to my partner, she replied "Can't you just use the stand as a support and lay the model on it's side?". To hide my embarrassment at not thinking of that in the first place I thanked her for the suggestion and tried it out, varnishing one side at a time until the hull had been given 3 coats with a rub down with 'Micro Mesh' between each coat. Sorry, I did say this would be a quick one, so I'll just leave you with a few photos of where I'm at now. As ever, thanks for looking in and comments welcome. UPDATE #20
Hi shipmates, another quick update for you all. The rigging thread that I ordered from CMB didn't materialize today so it looks as though it will be Monday at the earliest before work can start again. So I've been tidying up little bits of the build such as staining the insides of the buckets, adding a touch of shadow to the inside of the neck of the amphora's and placing them in their respective places on the deck. Another thing I've re-worked is the rudder. While browsing the DeAg shop, I had a quick look at the dhow pictures there and noticed that lashings had been added to rudder which isn't mentioned in the instructions that come with the kit. In my humble opinion, I thought that it added a nice touch to the visual appearance of the model so I've improvised some lashings of my own (see photo). That's it for now, thanks for looking in and comments welcome and I'll leave you with a couple more photos. (Incidentally, the thread attached to the main mast is only temporary and was used to hold the mast in position whilst the glue was drying overnight). Thanks Jase, I still think that was down to you introducing me to 'Micro Mesh'. I don't know how I've managed without and wish I'd known about it at an earlier stage in the construction of the VIctory. Happy building David

UPDATE #21
Hi shipmates, Well, she's finished . My rigging thread arrived Tuesday and it was back to business..The only problems I had with the rigging were insufficient detail in the instructions and the accompanying pictures were not too helpful either due to their small size and the fact that they had been overlaid with arrows indicating the route. However, with a little thought and the modeller's version of 'artistic licence' I managed to complete it all and was very satisfied with the final result. So, my first wooden model is complete and I can now get back to work on the Victory which has been neglected for a couple of months while this build was ongoing. To sum it all up, this has been a very satisfying little model to build and well worth the money in my opinion. It has given me the confidence I needed to progress with the rigging on the Victory, which in all honesty, I was getting rather anxious about. Everything about the kit was quality and the three different woods used really contrast well with each other. There was plenty of everything needed for for the job, and I can't blame AL for my running out of thread - I'm sure that for any more experienced modeller there would have been more than enough. Finally,I would like to thank everyone who has looked in on this diary and left comments and encouragement. Happy building David PS: Apologies for quality of pics, my flash failed to fire on some of them.daffy09 attached the following image(s):
