Welcome back again friends, here's another update on the L'HERMIONE build diary.
STAGE 09
This stage sees the fitting of the transom board and the planking under it.
First of all, before working with the transom, it was neccessary to use it to draw a template of the upper row of cut-outs on a sheet of paper to be kept aside ready to use later in the build.
A slight curve needed to made to the transom board to make it fit the hull, so rather than soaking it and risking the laminations parting, I used steam from a kettle, gently bending the curve by hand until I achieved the correct radius, then it was just a matter of glueing and clamping it in position and leaving the glue to dry for a couple of hours.
Satisfied that it was securely fixed in place, the next step was to shape a length of plank to accomodate the space left underneath by the curve and glue it in place.
Finally, another 3 planks were laid above each other to fill the remaining space in the stern.
That completed stage 09 of the build.
The next stage sees the commencement of planking the lower hull, so see you all there.

Looking good David, very nice work.... .. Be careful with the transom now it has been fitted, it is very easily snapped especially around the window area.... Regards Alan

Thanks for the encouragement guys. I've just started planking the lower hull which is going to be slow progress with lots of shaping so it's going to be a 'measure twice, cut once' or in my case, 'measure, sand, fit, measure, sand, fit, sand some more and measure again before glueing. Those pointy bits are proving a challenge for me.
Thanks for the warning Alan, I've got some blocks to sit her on when she's upside down so hopefully I'll get through the planking process without damaging the transom.
Should get another update posted when I've completed the 3 or 4 rows of shaped planks and before moving down to the keel for the garboard planks.

Thanks phil, glad you like her. I think she will be a beautiful model when finished.
I've been reading ahead on the instructions and there are one or two things that I will need to address when I get to them, for eg, the cannon rigging is very basic (only 1 rope holding the gun carriage to the bulwarks, I'm looking to improve on that somehow) and there are no footropes on the yards (that will definitely need attending to at the time).

Hello friends, here's another update on the L'HERMIONE build
STAGE 10 - 1
I've finally finished laying the next rows of planks on the side/lower hull.
The instructions require that after laying 2 rows of planks with no adjustments other than sanding the ends of the stern planks to match the angle of the transom planks.
After that, the following 3 rows had to be specially shaped according to the dimensions given in the instructions.
At the stern, they had to tapered to a point and at the bow tapered down to 2mm leaving a 4mm gap at the bow to allow for the placement of the stem later on.
Doing this work has been especially challanging for me and I'm sure this is the hardest part of the build so far.
The final row was particularly tricky at the stern where the plank is left 'full width' but has to be shaped to follow shape of frame #12 and curve up to meet the transom planks. For this I left the planks soaking overnight to make them malable enough to take not only the tight curve but a slight transverse twist also. At the bow the planks were again tapered to 2mm.
Because I shall be attempting to paint her, I have decided that I will leave any shaping until the hull is completely closed up. There will be lots of filling and sanding needed so that the hull ends up the right shape particularly at the bow where try as I might a lot of 'clinkering' is occuring.
The pictures show where I am now - warts and all.

I guess it's just my lack of experience. The instructions could be more descriptive but having them on DVD is helpful as I can view them on the PC as I work which is really helpful.

Hi friends, here's another update on the L'HERMIONE build.
STAGE 10 - 2 GARBOARD PLANKS
Managed to get the garboard planks laid today.
The instructions tell us to lay these planks parallel to the keel leaving a 4mm gap all the way along to allow for fitting the keel strips later.
At the stern, the planks extend out from the end of the keel by 2mm and at the bow they are shaped to follow the curve of the keel, again, extending forward by 2mm.
I used an offcut from a piece of planking to act as a guide to achieve an even 2mm spacing over the run of the planks.
That completes this update.
The next update will describe the laying of a further 4 rows up the hull.
