That concludes this week's update of my build log. I still have the free flood holes to add to this section, plus 4 sea lockers and edging strip to the upper lip of the lower deck before i can move onto the next phase of modifying the conning tower. Good morning from 'The Dockyard'. Well i'm back from my hols in Cornwall, back to work and back on the modelling. This update continues with scratch building modifications and adding detail to the conning tower of my 1/48 scale model of U-boat U230. The next step was to add the 'free-flood' holes to the lower deck of the conning tower. These 'free-flood' holes allow the sea water to flood in when the submarine is dived and prevent the structure from being crushed by sea pressure and allow drainage when surfaced. I first marked out a pencil line around the lower deck as seen in the attached photo. I then had to mark out the spacings for the free flood holes. My donor model had a lot more free flood holes when compared to photos of U995 and U230's conning tower; so i went with my reference photos. The are eleven holes each side, so after a bit of calculation I could mark out their spacings. The best thing I found for this job was not to use a ruler, but a small piece of card with the gap drawn on it in pencil. By simply placing the 'cardboard ruler' against the horizontal line, I could mark out evenly and correctly, even around the tapered areas where the steel rule struggled. I then proceeded to drill out the free flood holes in various stages, using larger drills at each stage. I decided on this method so as to not 'tear' the plastic if I had gone in with the final drill size. The attached photo shows the first hole being drilled with a 1.0mm diameter drill. I then drilled the remainder of the holes with this size drill before opening these holes further with a 1.2mm diameter drill, a 1.6mm diameter drill and finally a 2.0mm diameter drill.
