hi bodge,I'm only on kit 3 out of nine,long long way to go.as for balsa,I liked it,as I've used it a lot on aircraft.this kit has a veneer overcoat and modelspan on top of that.

Taking shape very quickly, Modelspan is a tried and tested method that works and many still use, and like you say, it has been a very familiar product to model aircrafters for many years.
