jase wrote:Hi Alan,
Guessing your camara flash is messing with the colours a bit. Just interested whos paints you are using and what you have for paint referance?
Jase Hi Jase, camera can play tricks but what you see is close.... Paints used so far are Humbrol rust for the well deck lower walls and Humbrol No 34 flat white for the upper.... The references being used so far are TRMA's colour reference chart, finartmodels build which is reportedly the most accurate Titanic model ever built, The Model Makers Manual by Peter Davies-Garner plus other well known web sites including Rivet Counter..... Will be using TRMA's colour reference guide for the vast majority of the painting..... .. From what I have seen and read so far there is no definitive proof on exact colour shadings but only best guesses using best available info, there are no paint samples surviving to go by.... Hope this answers your question.... .. Thanks for looking in and commenting, it is very much appreciated.... Kind regards Alan

Looking good so far Alan, when do the planks start going on Steve

stevie_o wrote:Looking good so far Alan, when do the planks start going on Steve Thanks Stevie... am miles away from planking the hull yet, instructions say to do a lot of work on the decks first and get them fitted... after that I have to get the wiring and led's in place, work on preventing any light bleed... once that lot is done then I can get down to actually planking the hull..... This build is going to take time... but what a challenge..... Regards Alan

Have been experimenting a little on how to produce the bulkhead lights on the well decks and possibly the roof lights for the promenade... Think I have come across a method that looks very acceptable to me.... Started by using 0.5mm eyelets and simply cut the stem off, .5mm meant it didn't look out of scale.. Drilled .4mm holes into the bulkhead and using a little CA glued the eyelet over the hole and left to dry ... Gave the eyelets a coat primer followed by a couple of coats of matt white... Finally, applied Krystal Klear to give the impression of glass.... As I haven't yet ordered led's and fibre optics yet I had to resort to using one of the fibre optics from the xmas tree to see what the effect would be... think I am quite happy with it so far... Sorry for the last photos being a little out of focus, difficult to operate the camera on macro and hold a fibre optic in place..... Happy building all... Well you certainly have some patience Alan, looks like a result though and will have a great effect when done. Steve

Steve Thanks Steve, have just now ordered all the led's, resistors, wiring etc to start lighting this kit. Feel the model would come to life if I can get bulkhead, wall and ceiling lights to light up and fibre optics I believe is the way to go.... time will tell whether it will be a success or not, if not I can always leave the lights switched off..... Thanks Moriarty for taking the time to look in.... the way Mantua supply this kit in 5 separate parts, 4 if you are doing the static display makes this a lot more affordable, buying the parts as you need them.... Will be doing all I can to do this build justice and right now am waiting for led's etc to allow me to plan out the lighting. Hoping the parts will start arriving tomorrow to let me continue..... Thanks Jase, think this is going to take some time especially when I look at all the additional mods required just for Part 1, the hull let alone the superstructure..... One step at a time eh..... Have finally finished the forward well deck and there were a number of changes than needed to be made.... On the forward bulkhead needed to add the two portholes, add the pipework above the doors on the portside, add two watertight hatchdoors and change the watertight doors from single to doubles. On the rear bulkhead, add all the portholes and the two bulkhead lighting units.... The instructions leave these bulkheads blank with the exception of doors which were all in the wrong place.... .. Have also come to the conclusion I hate working with white paint, too easily marked for my liking but am sure technique will improve the more I use it..... Am waiting now for the arrival of some matt clear varnish to protect the bulkheads... .. Tomorrow I hope to have the forward well deck fitted and do some testing on lighting the portholes with FO.... then onto the aft well deck ... In regards to the lighting I have had to consider some key changes to the build sequences... Instructions say to fit all the decks in place before moving onto the planking stage. If I do this then I will not have any access to modify any lighting arrangements should it be needed so have decided that I will simply pin the decks in place so they can be removed once the planking is complete.... Also on some of the tests I have done, the amount of light coming through the portholes on the bulkheads appeared to be very limited and I put this down to the thickness of the bulkheads and it will be the same for the hull when planked as she is double skinned..... I think my only option here is to use fibre optics throughout together with leds on their own... By being selective on the portholes this means I can have some lit with FO, some showing dull ambient light and some not lit at all, am hoping this will give me the correct balanced look.... Time will tell..... Happy building all... Regards Alan Gandale attached the following image(s):

Hi Alan, Lovely work on what appears to be a really good kit. One suggestion, (If not already put forward)take a look at minibrass. They do a wealth of brass etch for the Titanic in a multitude of scales, 1:200 included. Titanic EtchI realise it`s not cheap, as I have costed the etch for my Hachette build, but it may give you ideas as to things you can improve with your kit, if needed. I love the Titanic as well, so "Happy Building", will be watching with interest. Regards delboy271155 (Derek) COME BACK GUY FAWKES "YOUR COUNTRY NEEDS YOU"

I have been looking at the Minibras etch sets and although pricy they are impressive but have also noticed some of the doors are the wrong kind and some watertight hatches are in the wrong position.... That said, the etch supplied with the kit is also very good even though it is made of thin ply rather than brass, the ply is very flexible and remarkably strong.. Will post some close up photo's this evening to give you and idea of the detail.... The only thing I am not too keen on is the railings and stairways so minibras railings could very much be on the wish list, stairways will have to be thought about .... ... Thanks again...... Regards Alan

As promised, here is a couple of close up pics of the supplied ply etch.... Most of it will be used but think the railings will be left out.... Regards Alan Gandale attached the following image(s):
