I spent the past few days giving the gratings a couple of coats of varnish...and an equal number of days painting the cannon balls matt black...So, today, I began the task of placing each 2mm cannon ball into position in the racks, and quite a task it was...no soonerv had I got them into line (so I thought) I looked back at the line balls that I had just laid, and spotted one solitary ball pushed up proud of the rest...I gently pushed it down into position and found another ball further up the line pop up out of the line!! Pushed that one in, and..(you guessed it).. another little sod popped up!!! Two hours later, I finally got them into place, but some of the little black cannon balls were scratched...Well??? I think that I can live with that here are a few pictorial results of my little run in with Victory's cannon racks..
Confused BlinkCursing

I had visited the newsagent to collect Issue 69 because it was not in with my usual magazines last week, and of course, to collect Issue 70...But to my disappointment, this weeks issue was not available either, so O re-ordered both...Not phased out by this hiccup...I had enough back issues in hand to get on with my build...After completing the racks, I noticed that the decking immediately around forward and main mast holes looked a bit week so I made two 2mm thick ply collars to glue into position. When the next deck is fitted only the main mast collar would be slightly visible...I also started work on the rudder, preparing the parts and, using a needle file, I scored vertical lines into the rudder to give it the plank affect...

Well, that is the lot for today...Tomorrow, I shall try and make up the rest of the rudder and fit it in place...Then, paint the hull, with a bit of luck??? So...dig out the grog shipmates and happy building...Aaarrrrr!!!

I was sitting here looking at my model, and do you know when you have something on your model that is not quite right and it continually screams at you to put it right?? Well, I had one of those events prior to the weekend...In my case, it was the Trimmings as covered in Issue 44...It got so bad that, as soon as I had had my breakfast on Saturday morning, I launched into my build and ripped the old trimmings off in seconds flat!!...In fact, I was quite surprised in just how easily the four strip of wood came away from the bow post!! Having had my TV knocked out by a thunderstorm since last Thursday, I had nothing else to do but re-do the trimmings...so, here in the first picture was how the trimmings were, and the rest is how they are now...

Using the good old tried and tested procedure of soaking the wood in hot water for fifteen minutes and clamping the wood around the extremities of a plastic beaker then left to dry out for six hours or more. (I left mine over night)The next morning, the trimmings were in almost perfect shape to apply to the bow post straight away.

Next job to do is trim them and sand them down, and no more niggling...Until...The next time!!

I had spent the last few days trying to make up the rudder hinges, and using super glue I glued the gudgeon pins (or pintles) into place in the centre of each trap.

Because the top-most strap had to be shortened by at least 8-10mm, I decided to use those off cuts to make up a bracket that was to hold two eye bolts later on in the rudder construction.

I had got nearly all if the hinges in place on the rudder, gluing the straps into place as I went along. and upon fitting the final strap, I found that the gudgeon pin came loose from the central point where I had glued it...obviously the glue that I was using was not as strong as I had hoped...So, I shall have to find a remedy to this problem as I went along.

I plodded on regardless knowing that I had a loose gudgeon pin and continued to fit the last of the hinges. And using cropped nails I decorated the hinge straps on the rudder.

Once I had all the hinges in place I drilled out the two holes in the plate that I had placed onto the second rudder shoulder earlier and super glued to eye bolts into the holes.

Then I dry fitted the completed rudder in place, ready for the next step of securing it in place.

That's all for today...more pictures to follow...Blink

Today's build entry may not be much, but I thought it best to make it anyway. I have made many models in my past (the plastic ones) and when it came to painting them, I must admit, I was not very good at painting them!! So, I had been giving myself some real mental grief over the past week about painting this model, and all sorts of imaginary disasters played over and over in my mind...but today, I took the bitt between my teeth and started painting the hull...Okay, okay!! It's only one thin black line, but I made a start!! I thought that would make use of my up to this time dormant "Helping Hands Magnifying Glass" and adapted it to to hold a pencil then used it to draw the line around the hull (below the lower wale).

With the pencil line marked...(using the sharp end of the pencil) I fitted a strip of 12mm wide masking tape around the hull below the wale (up against the underside of the lower wale at its lowest point) following the pencil line from bow to stern. Then, using Humbrol 33 matt black paint, I applied the first coat 15mm above the pencil mark all round the hull then put the model aside for the paint to dry over night.

Well, that's my lot today, I shall attempt to give the lower hull a couple of coats of white undercote tomorrow. Happy building lads
