I agree Tom, it does look like the diagonals at least are spirals in that photo, though the verticals look plain? I was looking at photos #1 and #2 in post #1 when I made my comment and in which they do look plain to me including the diagonals? Just an observation as I say, not nit-picking just pointing it out? Cool ThumpUp

The WW1 road loco's were bling stripped versions of Showman's engines, so if originally built with spiral roof stanchions there would not be any need to swop them to being poles, hence why Daran has left as is and has removed the bling conntent and made a few mod's to the kit make it look about right.

Yeah, I see your point Tom and I suppose it was a case of some did, some didn't and some had a mix of plain and spiralled, which is confirmed in the three photos in posts #1 and #12? I'm sure whichever way it is done the model will look very cool when finished and a subject that is rarely if ever tackled, especially in this larger scale? Cool ThumpUp

The reason why is that some we ex-road rollers and other were ex-showmans engines, in effect its a mix, though more often than not both had an element of spiral stanchions, just a case of which manufacturer and which type.

The engine in the pictures is a different manufacturer to the engine I am building, I am using the pictures as a guide along with info from books and web sites. The engines were stripped of all non essential equipment, generator, bell, whistle, lights and any fancy trimmings. Anything that was needed for the engine to function was either an easy modification or left untouched as time and cost were of the essence. It was a case of "need it yesterday, so do bare minimum". Some engines had the canopy shortened as the removal of the generator also removed supports, so it was an easy task to cut the canopy back and leave the remaining supports even if they were spiral, some had the canopy and supports removed completely. It is an interesting subject, and researching and building the kit has been a lot of fun.BigGrin BigGrin

The howitzer has now been given a coat of primer, I will leave this to dry overnight. I have started on the engine base colour, a really dark olive drad to start, for shadows and edges, this will be left to dry then the actual base olive drab will be used to fill. Once that is dry I will then go over it again with a light olive drab for highlighting areas and weathering. The back of the smoke stack nearest to the piston block has had the paint crazed to give the appearance of extreme heat, being sheltered more than the front. It will get more weathering later in the build. The crank shaft and conrods and gears will be painted by hand later, as will some of the finer details.BigGrin

The base colours are almost done now, then I can start painting in the details. Joe's body has had the base colours done, just his head to finish, then he also can have some details. After some research, I discovered there is a winch built into the left hand drive wheel driven by a clutch, so this will be getting a cable and eye later on. While all of the engine and parts dries I will get the howitzer into its base colour.BigGrin

Nice job on the paint work, starting to look more like a work horse than a fairground machine. Will look great with the howitzer.

Thanks for looking in and your comments everyone.BigGrin
I have started to paint in some ot the details, first up was the cab floor and the coals. The floor was given a base coat of flat wood and then a black wash. Then lighter shades of various browns were dry brushed over the top to pick on the grain details and to give it a worn look, then a dry brush of black to simulate coal dust being walked into it. The coal was simply flat black then dry brushed gloss black to pick out individual coals and give them a slight shine. I have started to add chips and scratches to the coal bunker. The crank and gears were painted gun metal and then dry brushed with steel silver. Dry run of the panels to check the fit, and then I painted Joe's head!LOL BigGrin

Nem,

Just outstanding work! BigGrin

This is just for grins but you may like it. With my build I put some real coal in the hopper to build it up a bit. We have coal seams in our area so in was easy to find but you could also go to the locomotive side of your hobby store. I broke it up to size, put it in the hopper and poured a little watered down white glue on it. Then sprinkled a bit more than needed on top of the wet stuff. Let it dry over night and simply dumped out the non sticking excess.
