The next step was the headlights. These were made of solid white metal. Normally the ends would of been painted white to simulate the headlight but I don't really like this effect. Plus the body is white and the overall appearance would look bland.

What I did was to drill out a dish shape in each headlight with a pilot drill and then a larger drill to open out the recess until it met the rim.

See attached photo.

I then glued clear plastic to the front of each light and filed it round.

These turned out very well and it's something I will do again if I encounter solid white metal lights.

See attached photo.

Lights fitted. The shiny drilled surface behind the lense gives it that realistic, reflective quality.

Next job was the wing mirrors.

I filed any flash off, which was minimal and stuck aluminium tape to act as the mirrored surface. I had already pre-drilled the locating holes before the bodywork was sprayed. It was just a case of opening them out again with a 0.9mm drill before gluing and fitting the wing mirrors.

This photo shows the difference in size between my U-boat and the van. The U-boat is 1/48 scale while the van is 1/43 scale. The van would be 9mm shorter if it was 1/48 scale, so not much really, but it conveys how large the U-boat is.

Well that's the 1/43 scale Bedford HA van completed.

It's been a very enjoyable build and gets handed over to Suzanne on Thursday so she can wrap it up ready for her wedding at Usk Castle on Saturday 27th May.

Suzanne will give the van to Brian during the 'speeches' at her wedding.

I have never met Brian and he doesn't know what I look like so it will be a real 'fly on the wall' moment when he opens it up. He has always wanted a small model of a HA van but could never find one. He wasn't fussed about colour or lack of detail, just a small, HA van to display in his office. Next Saturday, not only will he get a small model of a HA van but it will have his logo on the side with correct number plates. Not to mention The Sun newspaper with his name on the headlines and a Welsh rugby book on the dashboard.

I'm sure there will be a tear or two from both of us.

Below are some photos of the finished van mounted on it's oak plinth.

I will post some more photos of the Bedford in the 'Finished Models' section of the forum during the next couple of days.

Thanks for looking in, all of your kind and encouraging comments and being a good bunch.

Kind Regards,
Phil W.BigGrin

That's pretty awesome. Never have the patients for that level of detail but enjoy seeing work from those that do.
