Progressing nicely David, planking this one as per the instructions is not as straight forward as you'd expect and you're making really good progress.  .. The clinkering at the bow will continue and you see this in the instructions..... Look forward to your next update.... Regards Alan

David You are doing a cracking job on the planking but like you i thought the shape of this one would make the planking easier. I see the "little people" they do as an aftermarket part are becoming available - are you going to add the crew to your build? Happy Modelling

Thanks for the encouragement. Yes, I might just have a go at the crew figures although I've never attempted anything like that before so it will be yet another learning curve if I decide to get them.

CREW FIGURES FOR HERMIONE L'FAYETTE
Following on from the post I had from Birdaj2, I had a look in at CMB and apparently they are out of stock at present but will have them in stock sometime in September.
It's a set of 14 figures (including the Marquis Lafayette) which will require assembly and painting according to CMB.

Hi friends, here's another update on the HERMIONE build
STAGE 10 - 3 NEXT 4 ROWS OF PLANKS
Welcome back and thank you for the good comments and words of encouragement.
I've spent the last couple of days laying the next 4 rows of planks, starting from the garboard plank and working upwards.
Each plank has a 2mm overhang at the bow and the stern.
At the bow, the planks are shaped to follow the upward curve of the keel.
At the stern, each plank is laid with a gap between it and the next, the instructions give required distances between each plank.
The first has a 4mm gap between it and the garboard plank.
The second has a 3mm gap between it and the 1st plank
The third has a 3mm gap between it and the 2nd plank
The fourth has a 4mm gap between it and the 3rd plank.
As each row was laid, they were glued and pinned into place and clamped at the ends and left overnight to dry.
I've gone back to the use of brass pins and pin pusher as my other methods (modified bulldog clips and screw-in clamps) were not working very well due to the angles being quite acute in places and also the frames are not very thick and my screw-in clamps wouldn't 'bite' sufficiently to hold the planks securely in place while the glue was drying.
That completes this update so thanks for looking in

New update on L'HERMIONE build
STAGE 10 - 4 (Next 6 rows of planks)
Hi again friends and welcome back. Thanks for all the comments.
It's taken several days of blood and tears to get the next 6 rows of planking onto the hull. Oh, how wrong I was when I thought this hull would be easy to plank.
It's been slow going as I had to leave each row overnight so that the glue would set enough to remove the pins.
Because of their position on the hull, the transition between the sides and the bottom, each plank needed a considerable amount of work to lay correctly. Not only did they need shaping to a point at the bow, they also needed chamfering to an angle along their length. I started each row at the stern with quite a tight bend around the last frame and the transom former.
After checking the fit, I used Zap CA medium glue to fix them in place and clamped them down until dry. Then worked my way forward using Aliphatic resin glue along the edges of the planks and pinning them down until dry.
The instructions haven't been particularly helpful with this stage and a lot of improvisation has taken place, but the end result is satisfactory for me as the pictures show.

The transition from the stern to the main hull looks very steep well done on achieving a nice plank sweep David. A little bit of filling and a good sanding it will be as smooth as silk Rgd Martyn Building ?

new update on the L'HERMIONE build
STAGE 10 - 5 (CLOSING THE HULL)
Hi friends and welcome back to my L'hermione build diary. Thanks for all the words of encouragement and comments.
This time we are finishing the hull planking and closing the hull.
Things were definitely getting a little tricky at this stage, with some very odd shapes in the lay of the planking which had to be addressed, but we got there in the end.
I used several of my 5 x 2mm offcuts from the planking to minimise waste and a lot of the time consumed here was taken up with measuring, shaping and sanding the various short lengths of planking to complete the job.
Also, I was making use of the sawdust from all the sanding, and mixing it with the aliphatic resin to produce a fine filler to take up the very small gaps at the 'pointy' ends of the shaped planks and this worked out quite well.
That's about it for this update and the following images show the results of the last few day's work.
