I got introduced to it from somebody on this forum a couple of years ago - it's great for things like this but i still prefer Milliput and Squadron for filling jobs.

Thanks for the support Alun, to be honest I am trying to steam through the hull so I can get stuck into the suprstructure and then the build will slow down a lot!! Huh Cool

Painting the deck continued
Total build time 34 hours

Today i have concentrated on the armament mounts. As described in my last build post these have a dark grey stripe at the bottom, so this is how I did it... First job was to mask the mounts off, that i painted dark grey yesterday, I have used low tack decorates tape but , make sure the tape is fully in contact with deck. I have estimated the stripe to be 1.5mm bearing in mind i will be overlaying the deck with a wood deck. I found a strip of scrap etch that was perfect for the job of creating a cutting edge, it is important to use something a sharp blade wont damage etch is perfect as it is flexible for the curves. Placing the brass strip against the mount and square with the deck i tacked the strip in place.

Using a new blade i carefully but firmly scribed along the cop of the brass strip to cut through the masking tape being carful not to damage the surface of the plastic. the length of my strip meant i had to position the strip twice for the secondary armament mounts and four times for the primary gun mounts. Once done i could remove the top part of the masking tape leaving a 1.5mm masked of strip at the bottom.

The mounts needed two coats of paint but once the masking was removed i think i got a reasonable finishRazz

As always any constructive comments most welcome.

Upgrading the hull.
Total build time 39 hours

Started adding the MK1 Design etch to the hull. i have decided the best way to brake up the repetive work is to do the hull in sections so i have done both the scuttles and the hand irons on the port stern. The scuttles look splendid and when on really easy thanks to my new gem picker (thanks for the link TomicCool ) The hand irons a re a time consuming job I needed a magnifying glass to fold the ends but it does make them easier to fit in the long run. the irons should be 2mm apart i had marked this on a strip of card then marked up the hul in pencal as a guid when fixing the irons on. I have a brass propeller protection kit on order from Germany that i think is winging its way over strapped to the back of a snailHuh. Thats it for now.

BigGrin Hi Jase
she's looking good, as for the hand irons I would leave them until last or fit when you really need to as from experience I have found this type of item has a nasty habit of going missing. Im sure you have your own way of doing things just speaking of my experiences with such items

Hi Andy,

I generally do the hull first then work from the centre of the ship out doing the deck fittings after the superstructure then main guns and railings and ladders last. As you say it is easy to knock things off otherwise, and fittings can get in the way. the Propeller protection will go on with the railings at the end as i am going to have them swung out which i think will look stunning. Also considering getting a new catapult with the walkways on it.

BigGrin Hi Jase
I have read on other forums the debate about these walkways as actual photographic evidence is rare [ unless you have a pic stashed awayLOL ] and pictures of the wreck do not show these walkways in situ or show evidence of being attached so to speak, of course they could have rusted or been blown away during the sustained British bombardment or were they planed to be fitted but the work not carried out

Hi Andy,

Its a very interesting question and there really is no conclusive evidence either way, however. We do know there was an intent to fit them, Tirpitz had her deck shape changed to allow access to the end of the catapult. it would seem odd that you could not get to the end of the catapult once extended. You have to remember that Bismarck was not fully complete when she left Norway, She did not have the correct AA guns for example. Most of the surviving pics pre sinking were taken during sea trials and working up when fit out was not complete. Some believe they had not been fitted yet, which in my view meant using the catapults was a risk (although they were never actually used in anger) one was damaged and replaced with a catapult from Tirpitz. There is a pic often used as evidence of the walkways but actually what it shows is a catapult support that was used during the catapult replacement (sorry could not find pic on the net. Others believe the walkways were in some way removable, this is also very unlikely it would dramatically increase the launch process time not efficient at all and there is no other removable walkways on german ships other than gang ways plus why do that and have to repeatedly assemble disassemble and stow away - nonsense i my view. so we come back to had the walkways not yet been fitted or had they just been fitted. truth is we don't know, i have never seen any comments from the survivors on this point.

If you look at the 7th pick down on this link you can clearly see some brackets on the bulkhead and some frame ribs, some including me see this as evidence that the walkways were in place at time of sinking.

Hi Jase,
Been following this with interest, ive not built a plastic ship since i was a kid, (nothing on this scale though) and im really enjoying this build.
Can you please give an indication of the scale of this model, a pic with a ruler maybe?, i know its 1/200 but in the pic of the stern with hand rails in place etc i just cant get an image of how big it is and how fiddly those PE parts are.
Thanks
Steve

Hi Jase,
In the Anatomy book the Studded Anchor Chains are shown in the 1/100 drawings with just over 6 links per Inch. So scaling down to 1/200 gives 12-13 Links/Inch.
I've been looking to replace the Chain with the correct Studded Chain and I've found this and I think I'm going to order a metre of the 12 Links one. A bit pricey but will look nice at this scaleBigGrin

Thanks for the link. they look stunning have to say i thought you had lost your grip on reality when i saw £75 but then realised that was for 5m LOL LOL

that would make them about 2mm per link as Andy says is supplied in the kit

Just for you Steve,

The hand irons are 2mm across and there is a fold needed at each leg end. the overal ship length is 125cm or as my dad said blooming eck is it a canoe - which is i think an old engineering term for 125cm LOL

Looking great Jase.

Might be a bit late for yourself but if anyone else is thinking of masking up the gun bases check out Micron Masking Tape.
